Note the part circled yellow just below the build plate. There is a blue sleeved cable running out of the engine bulkhead into it. Much thanks for any information.

Its either the flux capacitor or the energy polarisor. Smile

By the way, there is a plastic arm on it that is pulled by the aforementioned cable, but I can't find anything within the car interior that activates it. So what is that thing?

looks like it could be the heater tap? my eyes must be going in my old age, I can't really pick out a lot of details, except that it has 2 coolant (?) hoses, and possibly what looks like a sleeved cable going thru the firewall?

it looks exactly like a heater valve Smile
if ya get someone to wigg with the hot/cold setting on the console.. should move that cable n stuff..

My heater switch has always been broken - no wonder nothing in the console activates it! Thanks heaps!

its the whatsamacallit, or is it the whosamajig!sorry its the heater tap!.when you slide the control from heat to cold it opens and closes letting hot water from the engine into the heater core!
