Interesting, but clearly a reactionary comment heavily pigmented by hundreds of years of British imperial monarchical subversion.

What is the English language? Who defined it and when? Should I refer to 'you' as 'thy'? Clearly your medieval ancestors would think you spoke like a punk, even though you are speaking 'English'.

Language is an evolutionary process, and part of that is the embracement of what the populace at large are using/saying/writing. The simplification of language, the removal of redundant consonants/vowels, introducing uniformity in spelling and pronunciation are all part of the evolutionary process and this is all largely driven by the population. That's why Latin is only seen in Catholic masses on Christmas Day and medical texts and not spoken by 4 billion people.

So peronally, I prefer to go to the harbor in Sydney, and admire the beautiful blue color of the sky. There are tons of Yanks there with their fat asses. When dining, they favor deep fried foods, as they like the flavor.

Oh yeah, and by the 'rules', it's 'Yanks', capital 'Y', plural n. (informal, proper) an American, as opposed to 'yank' - v. to pull suddenly.

Anyway, what times did you end up getting, Glenn?

GT, if you really want to be pedantic about the matter, you would have to include that the origins of "Yanks" was in fact the Yankees, dating back to the US Civil War and referring to those who came from the North. In that case, you are only referring to a percentage of the population from the United States of America, and only those on the eastern coast.

But yeah, enough dribble...what sort of times did you run, and give me a benchmark of something I can relate to so I know whether they are good or not Smile

JCMF, whilst I agree with you regarding the origin of the word, in common parlance today, 'Yank' refers to people from the USA, irrespective of their civil war partisanship, and this is even accepted by the Oxford Dictionary. My point was that being a proper noun, it should start with a capital letter.
Cheers Dave.

Capitol 'Y' now.

And the eternal catch-cry of the illiterate - "Language is an evolutionary process"
I am proudly Australian, and I speak and write in Australian English. If if was a Yank, I'd probably write as such - Please don't let your standards drop to their bastardised version of Engish.

Re: Glenn kicking ass down phillip island Mon, 03 June 2002 04:23 Go to previous messageGo to next message
I repeat my questions - who defines what is English? Illiterate? By whose standards? Why is American English bastardized? Isn't that their brand of English? What is Australian English and who defined that? Are we then not speaking our own bastard language? Is that a bad thing?

I too am proudly Australian, but refuse to accept that the only way to do something is the way it's always been done. This is the argument presented by most people who profess to be 'literate'. If everyone followed this logic, we'd still all be in caves grunting meaningfully.

Language is evolutionary. Ultimately, its terms are dictated by people.

EDIT: The Capitol is the parliamentary building in Wasington, D.C. I think you mean capital. Grin The correct spelling of bastardise is bastardize. Razz It is also incorrect to start sentences with prepositions, like and or but. hehehe If you keep this up I don't think I'll be able to understand you anymore.

Re: Glenn kicking ass down phillip island Mon, 03 June 2002 04:45 Go to previous messageGo to next message
You are exactly right - language is evolving and changing, and in the long run "correct" is defined by the general poplace. At the moment in Australia, however, "correct" language usage is not a constant. There are 3 MAIN types of English - Australian English, American English, and English English. While most Australian English spelling is derived from English English, American English is also creeping into our vocabulary in Australia. Currently, all three forms of the language are acceptable, although you will find that in a professional/business context, an organisation will have a preferred language type. In this case, it is possible for you to use the "wrong" spelling, but only in the eyes of whoever, in your organisation, has set the style.

Personally, I prefer Australian English over American, as I have an objection to EVERYTHING in Australia becoming American. But I still eat at McDonalds.

I don't want to see us become the 51st state of the USA....I refuse to accept that appendectomy or aluminum should become standard words here in Australia. That said, I see no problem with words like color, flavor, favor, where redundant vowels have been omitted.

I accept that various organisations have differing English standards.... I have published a couple of papers in various journals and I have no problem with this at all. That said, journals are not at the cutting edge of language change....that lies amongst the people.

The confusion in Australia ultimately reflects the youth of the nation, and its present inability to define itself in the world. This was crystallized as recently as 2 years ago with the overwhelming rejection of the institution of a republic. Whilst this national self doubt and search for an identity continue, reactionaries will continue to foster fear, paranoia and malsentiment in those who wish to engender change.

it's all very well to get rid of redundant vowels... but ass? an ass is a donkey. ARSE is how we pronounce it. it's not a matter of spelling, it's a matter of pronounciation. unless we all suddenly take on american accents, to my mind, ARSE will remain the correct spelling for that particular word.

"who defines what is English?"
Two things, the dictionary and school. The official version of both do not use American spelling, hence its use in Aus is incorrect.

Bastardise is correct, the incorrect American spelling uses a Zed for a lot of similar ending words.
I make genuine spelling errors, not deliberate ones ... unless they're obvious. Smile

And why is starting a sentence thus not correct?

I am not pre-cognisive about the positive manifestations of alternate entymology.

As referenced from the Concise Oxford Dictionary:

Bastardize v. to declare (a person) illegitimate.

Also, when I entered it in Microsoft Word using "Australian English", guess what? Bastardize.

For those that don't know, dictionaries are compiled by people, usually learned folk who have studied 'English' and have PhD's in the field, and this is supervised by an 'English' professor. These people scour current literature (papers, magazines, novels) to add new words and new meanings to old words. So in essence, dictionaries are a slightly behind the times means of seeing what people are saying/doing/thinking. The Oxford dictionaries (there are many) are compiled by the good people at Oxford University...I personally can't think of a more English academic establishment (except maybe Cambridge).

Bill, are you suggesting that your English is more English than an English English professor? Apart from flying jumbos and building 200 hp 4AGE's, have you been pursuing a PhD in English language history? Fascinating!

Bill, you have it back to front. It is indeed British English, and hence Australian English which utilises a "z" in the place of an "s". The American English is the purveyor of the "s".

Agree with GT (using a version of shortened and phonetically spelled English which, day by day, is becoming more common place).

Although (note, although used as a prepository contractor), grammar is too undergoing evolutionary change. It is now correct, according to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, to start any sentence with a preposition if the main theme of the former sentence is reflected in the next. This is to increase fluidity in modern day English and to promote it is a verbal language, rather than written.

(Exams are coming up, damn English, damn Law.)

Thanks for that Kim. Which edition of the COD is that? It would appear that even the highly conservative guys at the Oxford University English Department are moving with the times, albeit with a disclaimer!

Bill, your insistance that bastardize is actually spelt bastardise [sic] indicates to us all that even you, in a small tiny, quasi-insignificant way, are contributing to the evolution of the English language.

Ultimately, one must question the psyche of a person that comes to an informal car modification forum to correct spelling. It's a bit like shooting fish in a barrel. Not only is it the pinnacle of pedantry, but it is an incredibly insulting, demeaning and patronising act that can only be engendered by an underlying disdain of mediocrity and a sense of elitism. It bears no consideration for those on the forums who have not been as fortunate as yourself and were never potentially afforded the scholastic (and other) opportunities enjoyed by yourself.

I will be adding no further replies, but instead choose to finish with the English translation of an Italian proverb my father shared with me:

"Never argue with a fool. They drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience."

1. Americans (specifically North Americans, more specifically those from the United States of America) are the ones who use a 'z' instead of a 's' in words like apologise, bastardise, etc. I was married to one, I have had to communicate in both 'forms' of English, and have had to correct American English for the Australian Schooling system (and vice versa).

2. Can't we get back to Phillip Island and the Celica?? Isn't that what this thread is about? Don't we need someone with a trailer to go down and pick it up after it broke down (being a Celica)?? Or was it just left on the side of the road????

Alex (Sprinters!!! YAY!!)
