it is to a point..bigger than factory is usually good..but if you just put a 600x300x100 hybrid $200 core with 3" in and outs, on your stock 180SX expect a bit of lag! also, most of the off the shelf cores you by at autobarn and things like that, are usually bar and plate..these give the best flow through the core, but at the cost of efficentcy..a tube and fin however is more efficient at cooling..i have a custom PWR core only a little 450x250x75 custom end tanks etc etc..the core itself is capable of flowing 400hp at 1 bar (quoted from PWR) i can't remember the pressure drop, but is was equivelant to a bar and plate core of a bigger size..i'd rather have an intercooler that cools the air better than one that flows a little more CFM..having said that..the differences are pretty negligable..

Did some1 say throttle response and lag, think about how much time its going to take for the air to travel from one side of a large cooler to the other when you actaually open your throttle, not to mention the rats maze of cooler pipes you will have running from one side of your car to the other and back again. By the time that your engine got some air from it the race would be over. So unless you want to look fully sick wif a big arse cooler hanging out da front so you can get mad doses, and all da bros will be looking at ya ride then keep the size big enough to make the hp you want.

i dont mean to pick the shit out of ya but i think you got the description of bar & plate and tube & fin reversed.
Out of interest how much did the PWR item set you back?

i was thinking the same thing bout the bar\plate tube\fin difference
on my turbo car of pretty big capacity (almost a 3 litre 4 cylinder) - im running an aftermarket bar\plate 450x300x79 core (garret core i think) but have yet to trial it so i cant comment
generally - thicker is better than wider - ie. a 90mm core will cool better than a 79mm core of the same width and height. Efficiency is the key in my opinion

no wank factor is the key lol... as has been stated i think 450x300 is all you need for most street cars any bigger is just wank factor so i went for the 600x300

haha @ berad
just read some information and it detailed the size factor of intercoolers (stating that basically a smaller cooler can do the same if not a similar job as a bigger item you would find being also a cheap core stretching headlight to headlight by efficient core design and would also have way less effective pressure drop across the core yeilding more performance)
It also details differences between designs used in bar&plate tube&fin truck cores and why they are genrally more restrictive than your performance automotive cooler though they do cool better and also details the reasons why used cut down truck coolers is just a stupid idea to use on a car.
