pull it out with the engine running and see wot happens, could it be a relay? or just another thing with no real porpouse to confuse australian mechanics

well, it's not hooked into my microtech, so of course the engine will run without it 
I'm more concerned about what it does, so I know whether to relocate it or throw it out. do you have in in your car nath?

it's the relay that controls power to the VSV right next to it (which should control the water valve for the heater).
they're for the climate control
if you remove it you'll have no hot air unless you jig something else up.
