dodgy 4A-C in corolla

Hey guys, just looked at an 88 model corolla, all roadworthy except for that fact that the gears on the end of the camshaft has got 2 teeth broken off, the distributor teeth that run off it however are fine... he has the rocker cover pulled off obviously and it's not running and he tells me that it's the only thing wrong with it, but i'm thinking something else must be broken to cause that...
Anyone seen anything similar or know what might cause it?
Any help would be great

If the car's good, and dirt cheap, you should be able to get another 4AC from someone on here for not too much.

These teeth that are broken off are they for what the cam belt runs on (camshaft pulley) or is the dissy drive thats on the cam shaft ?
Either way i'm guessing its the dissy drive on the cam. Pull the dissy and see if you can turn it. About the only other thing i can think of is that something got jammed in between the gears like a tappet or a screwdriver

yes , the dissy drive is what it is... the dissy spins fine, which is what i thought is odd, but also i thought that if something had got stuck, the teeth on the actual dissy would break before the ones on the camshaft wouldn't they?

See if you get a camshaft from the wreckers. Fit it and turn it over by hand a few times see what happens before giving it a kick in the guts.
Hows the belt ?
