Why is my car using so much petrol?

Over a month ago I had a new head put on my 18RC. Since then I've been lucky to get 250Km to a tank of petrol. I've adjusted the mixture, timing, idel and none of this has made a difference. At one stage I used to get about 340 to a tank.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated as It's getting to the point where I won't be able to afford to drive my baby.
Thanks

dudette - did you alter the mixture to suit? or did someone with an O2 sensor do it for ya? not discounting your work but it still might be too rich at cruise or something - an o2 meter would pick this up straight away...

We did it in the drive way, didn't have screw drivers so used a trusty commodore key to turn the screws on the carbie.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, probably does but whenever I turn my car off it runs over and makes an awful noise in the carbie. Then can often let our a backfire. Even with the idel real low.

Tuning your car in the driveway without the proper equipment is like trying to play darts blindfolded. Someone with LOTS of experience might be able to get close, but never spot on.
If the car is backfiring and using lots of fuel it's obvious your timing and/or fuel mixtures are way out of whack. The only way to get it right is to take it to a workshop with a wide-band exhaust gas analyser and a chassis dyno. They'll be able to tune it to factory specs and your car will feel like new again.

I'll speak to my friend, he is a mechanic by trade. It's never done this before and we've always doen it our self.

One out of left field for you - is your cam timing correct?

Actually, that's a good question. We've dismantled it that often and put it back together that many times recently that it could be that. I think I'm just going to book it in to get it looked at by a mechanic. It's about 5th in the list at my place at the moment to get looked at.

I'd maybe think about checking your vacuum advance diaphram and the linkup to the carby.
My car started using about 26L/100km after the vacuum advance got removed from the carby for a supposed "performance" gain. Oh, yeah it was a rotor too...

Well when we first got it running after we replaced the head, it was running like a dog and then we replaced the distributor and it ran a lot smoother. about a year ago we rebuilt the carbie. So many possiblilities.
Thats why I'm keen on getting it professionally tuned and then work on the process of elimination.
