Neal Bates seems very expensive. I just gave them a call about replacing the head gasket on my 4A-C and was given an estimate of between $800 - $1000. In fairness it is essentially reconditioning the head, but WHOA! it's only a C. That's more than a third of the cost of a supplied and fitted GE.

The other thing I asked was how much to remove the existing C, and replace it with another (fitting only). He said it would take 12 hours to do. I'm no grease monkey, but seems like a hell of a long time to remove a few bolts, hoist the motor, and drop the new one in. Even if a full tune and service is included in that, it seems like an extraordinary amount of time.

I can't argue with that.... the most important thing is a job well done.

Try Promotive in Park St Belconnen. These guys are mates of mine, take pride in their work and dont' charge a fortune.

Dyno Tune in Braddon is also quite good.

Got to agree with AE86 about Neale Bates. When I was getting the 4AC replaced in my AE86, they quoted me hundreds of $$$ more than anyone else. The suspicious part was, the amount they quoted just for the engine (no installation) was as much as others quoted for fully installed!!

But, as you say, at the end of the day the quality of the work is important.

Matt

Promotive do general tune ups and maintenance. They prefer to stay away from the mod side of things.

Promotive are very good. I have taken my Celica to get the water pump replaced, a hub replaced, and a misfire fixed. Their price to replace the water pump was $200 less than NatRad, and the final price came in less than qouted. With the hub they took a look, then provided me with all the options and charged a very good price.

If you want your car serviced/repaired then I would definitely give them a go. I will be taking my Celica to them for all work.

Ultra Tune in Tuggerranong 62934393 for all servicing and tune ups, and general mechanical work , just don't ask them to do an engine conversion, Adam would shoot me!
