aftermarket gauges
|
Mon, 13 June 2005 17:31

|
In the market for some gauges for my car.
not really fussed about looks, just want something thats easy to read, reliable and accurate.
what are autogauge gauges like? look alright but seem too good to be true. like 30-40 bucks per gauge brand new.
i got omori's in my car and theyre pretty much what im after. simple design and does the job.
any thoughts/opinions/reccomendations..etc??
cheers

I'd go for some of these ones personally.
http://www.holleycarbs.com.au/pricol.html
Seem to be the best for a quality item that won't cost the earth, but like everything else you get what you pay for.

splitfire...might cost a bit though, but then again you pay for what you get..i.e. whats the point of having a guage if its not accurate?
go something about middle of the range. you shouldnt have to replace it then. and look in classifieds cause people are always selling em. .

Yep VDO all the way!! I think my smaller ones were like 40 each and they (VDO) are good enough to be used in some very large inductrial applications!
Im sure everyone has seen the pics of them on my TA22 but I am just wrapped at how well they came up
Go to repco and check out the current seimens/vdo catalogue im sure there are a few more styles to choose from..
And if anyone here works at VDO tell your boss I want my bloddy comission as im always flogging these things

Yeh they are fukkn crisp in person. Naa the little ones, oil, temp and fuel were around $40 each the speedo which is 280km was about $200,either way heaps cheaper then Autometer and Kmh which was the deciding factor for me...

Just out of curiosity, becuase i always wanted new gauges in my TA22, what do you use to hook them up to. Like do they come with sender units or something, and how difficult was the fuel level gauge to tie into the current system.
Cheers

yeah but $350 for one 52mm guage is not acceptable IMO, sure they might be accurate but i get 4 autoguage 52mm guages which look awesome and appear to be very accurate for $150
$1500 on guages and a control box is not money worthwhile IMO

I agree 100%. I don't understand how people can spend so much on guages when there are better things to spend on that may actually make it faster/better handling/stop better etc.
I have a wolf 3d hand controller for most of my guage reading stuff.
The other thing to note is that you only want guages that are easily readable because it isn't like you have much time to look at them when you are driving hard!

i have VDO gauges in mine..
in fact i got them brand new in box, but they were manufactured in the early 70's!! seriously!!
i also checked the temps vs my freshly calibrated Megasquirts temp sensors (which was calibrated with a K-type thermocouple datalogger and a water/glycol bath at uni ) and accuracy was approx +/-1deg as far as i can tell...
(edit, all the temp senders were brand new.. the oil pressure was original)
the Pricol are apparently made to the same specs as the VDO and cost less.
AND the VDO speedo's look awesome definitely on my shopping list..
as for the japanese brand name gauges.. they are, for the most part, just that.. they probably work as well as the VDO's for accuracy, but cost up to 10 times as much..
and as for autometer, afaik, their competition gauges (ie the oil filled types) are quite good, but their cheaper gauges are not so accurate...
then again, any elec sender gauge will not be as accurate as a purely mechanical gauge, imho.
save your dosh, get some nice simple VDO/Pricol gauges, and smirk at the "people" with $1000 worth of gauges on the front left side of their bonnet as they drive down George St
heh heh

oldcorollas,
can i just ask what your occupation is?? (research??)
you seem to know more about instrumentation than the avarage person...
|
sure... i'm.. umm.... well....
i have a Doctorate of Metallurgy. i specialise in high temperature corrosion reactions and electron microscopy/analysis.. for the past couple of years i have been working on bondcoats for thermal barrier coatings for jet turbine blades...
currently am working on electroplating of diffusion barrier coatings and platinum/nickel/iridium/hafnium onto superalloys (TMS132/CMSX4 etc)
typically i build, install, modify, and then use high precision equipment (like TGA.. measures sample weight inside a furnace to 0.1 microgram accuracy)
oh, and i have moved to Japan for two years with a JSPS fellowship from the japanese government
cars are my hobby/passion and when i decide to find out something abotu them, i try to learn as much as possible.. re: gauges, i checked into different brands, looked up independent (if there is such a thing) tests of gauge accuracy etc....
as for instrumentation, i usually have access to some of the best equipment in the world for various things... but for this i just needed a datalogging temp sensor and a temp controlled bath not too hard really.. you can do the same with a multimeter and K-type thermocouple from jaycar, and a thick bottomed saucepan..
you could also use a "precision temp sensor"part number.. LM35DZ ? the one that goes to 150C with accuracy of 0.1C. these give 10mV/C output so you can read it with any multimeter....
many options, all with much greater accuracy than your average gauge ...

I just got my gauges in the mail the other day. I got the autogauge smoke series as well... simply cause i can't justify spending 1k+ on gauges.
4 2" gauges and a 3.75" tacho with shift light set me back about $260. I actually only wanted the tacho but the other stuff was a bargain and i got carried away
All of them were electrical except the boost gauge and NOW i read that you reckon mech gauges are more accurate Stew??? Oh well... i'll test them out after i fit them in and tell you how accurate they are or aren't.
Eddie.

fair enough.
nice answer, thanks
i only asked because i am in my 2nd year of an electrical/instrumentation apprenticeship, and a lot of the time you talk of things that people who arnt in the trade wouldnt have heard of.
btw, i work at the Shell Refinery at Clyde
Power and Process Control engineer, Apprenticeship

Some guys jus cant afford it thats y...
Plus you can get them pretty cheap but you need to look at the right places, its worth the money. Just look at the guage compare to autometer and you can see the difference in quality.
