TA22 ST What to do Tue, 14 June 2005 02:09 Go to next message
After reading what you guys had to say about modding a GT I was somewhat taken back Very Happy

I want to change it, maybe an engine change one day, but at the moment suspension and shit. Now my question is, they arent that rare are they? I understand that any modifications you never get your money back, but I dont care.

To start with I want to warm up the 2T-B in it, what is suggested, my mate has a cam in his and an exhaust and a new carb(2T), and a few other things. I wouldent mind doing some similar mods, any links ideas welcome.

Yeh bit of a difference between the GT and ST though the ST's to my knowledge are getting pretty rare.I have heard ages ago that about 40-50 were brought over but ive only ever seen 2 apart from mine. As for warming up the engine a bit,I thought the 2TB had twin carbs? I have a webber with manifold that you can pm me about which will help a little but to be honest your flogging a dead horse by trying to get too much performance out of it.My suggestion would be to pull the 2t out but keep it aside for a nice clean and drop in a 2tg,the rest of the unique features are mainly in the interior so do what you can to restore them to factory specs.I will track down the number of an original interior restorer for you that I have lying around somewhere.

Good luck.

if your keen to keep the 2tb - which in fact only puts out not much less ( around 5 to 10 HP less ) horsepower overall less than a stock 2TG , invest in say a pair of webers - get a set of redline manifold adaptors ( aussie based - sydney ) a warm cam - and the dizzy balanced to match the cam and youd have one uber sweet single cammer without having to swap to twin cams ..

Whack on a set of extractors , a good sporty exhaust and have fun - Smile

whiteline and Kmac have all the suspension bits you need to make the car handle alot nicer - rear swaybar alone makes a tonne of difference !

My old ta22 had a warmed up 2tb in it and was a tonne of fun to drive - i miss it - but it has a good home and owner now Smile

So its would be at all putting any cash into the 2tb, just go straight to the 2tg, how much work is it? How much will the engine cost me?

Cheers for the replys dudes.

depends on what you want - the 2tg is a better platform for greater goods - but dont discount the 2t for mild fun ..

Hmmmm, Isnt the only real difference between the 2T-B and the 2-TG, compression, cam(extra one) and carbs?

+ a few other minor changes here and there - though personally i havent viewed the differewnces first hand - only on paper have i seen differences ..

2tg is def. free er revving , has slightly higher coompression , has the extra cam and more effective twin solex side drafts

Im sure theres a thread here somewhere listing the differences in detail

So they bolt straight in? No mount customizing and shit like that? Sounds good, might just try and fix my carbs/linkages atm, and sort some cash out for other mods first, and look into the 2tg later one.

Cheers dude.

not a 100 % straight swap but pretty close - i believe the water inlet for the water pump is different for one ..

Still easy enough to do though

Hi,

The 2TG should be an easy bolt-in swap for the 2TB. Keep the 2TB engine somewhere nice and safe. ST's are pretty rare and although they aren't the hallowed turf of the GT, you should make sure any mods you do are bolt-on only. That way, you can put all the ST gear back into the car when you wish to sell it as a genuine ST.

2T engine powers are...

2T - 100hp
2TB - 105hp
2TG - 115hp

The 2TG is pretty much a direct swap for the 2T or 2TB. All you need is a top 2TG radiator hose and turn the acceleartor linkage around the opposite way to the 2T setup.
Exhaust, engine mounts, gearbox, etc etc are exactly the same for the 2T, 2TB, 3T and 2TG.
The ST has a reasonable amount of exterior and similar interior to the GT model.
Eg ST has full length bonnet vents, full console, ammeter gauge, slightly different door trims to the GT. Can't remember if it has the hard top roof liner like the GT, have to check that.
The GT has additional things like power windows, tinted windows, oil temperature gauge, ok monitor and a few other things.
I'll post some of the Japanese brochures I have from my TA22 GT on my site when I get a chance.

The ST is still rare, I've seen only 2 genuine TA22 ST's in SA but as someone else said, there are about 50 or so imported to Australia.

Cheers,
Simon

I think I have only ever seen one. Would Toyota have brought any ST's in for "evaluation" like the GT's, or would they all be private imports?

On a somewhat related note, Holden imported a Carina hardtop in the early 1970's for comparitive purposes when developing its' version of the Gemini. Rolling Eyes
