Visual identification of AE86 Diff Wed, 15 June 2005 09:54 Go to next message
Its on an 1983 AE86 Toyota Sprinter, VIN plate says T50 S314. However the car has disc brakes on the rear. Which is what throws me off.

So I took some pics...

After a bit of searching on google, Club4ag and toymods I managed to find a post that said 8 bolts = S Series, 10 bolts = T Series, and many many posts saying "do a search". Very Happy Also afaik S series didn't come with disc brake hubs, only the T series diffs did.

I can't quite work out how many bolts there are on it, so if anyone would like to make an educated guess what it is (ie if its still a S314 or something else) and as to what's been done to this rear axle I'd appreciate it.

heh, I can count to well more than 10 last time I checked, I can't however see ALL the bolts on the diff to count em without putting the car on a hoist. I'm hoping one of the guys more accustomed to toyotas (as I'm a complete n00b at anything other than Nissan drivetrains) will be able to recognise the diff easily. And if it is an 8 blot S-Series, explain how it has disc brakes.

1. stick head under car
2. put hand on top side of diff if ur so unflexible to lean up and swivle ur head a bit
3. find bolt, move hand clockwise to next bolt, repeat until ur hand is in the same position it started in
4. add up total number of bolts

better yet, just looking at the first pic i can tell it's a T18 diff with sway bar mounts - which means its off a later model T18.

If it has discs, there is quite a possibility that this is a jap differential, but also could be a T18 diff with discs adapted.

The way i would tell is the end flanges - if you 'stick your head' Laughing behind one wheel, and look at the flanges which adapt to the backing plates of the brakes, it should either look like these:

lol @ my paint skills

hope it helps dude

Helps a lot, thanks mate... that's the sort of response I was hoping for.

I just recieved a TRD 2Way LSD (pic) out of an early model japanese AE86. Will this fit into the aussie T-18 housings if it turns out its the aussie one? Are they the ones that come out of the celiecas?

PS those paint skills are awesome... they look like they came out of a technical manual Very Happy

That LSD will definately fit into that diff.

The T18 diff is basically the exact same as the JDM diff apart from the end flanges/discs brakes, smaller axle bearings and obviouslt the LSD - but the housing/centre housing is somewhat identical.

have super happy sliding fun!
