18r-geu vs. 18r-g + EFI conversion Tue, 03 December 2002 02:20 Go to next message
Okay, I've definitely decided I want EFI on my 18r (carby's too hard to start in winter)

Is it easy to convert an 18rg to EFI?

how much of a power advantage would there be over the 18r-geu if any?

anything else I should know?

Thanks in advance,

Trent

If you have all of the necessary parts, it's piss-easy. I did it a few years back, and back then I'd never touched an EFI car before.

You won't get any more peak power with EFI (unless your original carbies were stuffed and/or out of tune), but you will notice a much fatter torque curve from idle to redline - and that's just as important as peak power for a street-driven car. Fuel consumption is heaps better as well!

So that means that the 18r-g with EFI conversion out-performs an 18r-g with original carby setup?

So that means there is an awesome advantage of that over the 18rgeu. Brilliant

Do you reckon you could gimme a quick list of the neccessary parts? I think I have a fair idea, but I may have overlooked something.

this is a bit off topic but, i was wondering since the 18r and 22r are of the same engine family, can you put the 18r-geu head on the 22re block?

I'm pretty sure that the answer to that is a big fat no.

You will need:
- inlet runners
- plenum
- throttle body
- fuel rail & injectors
- 18R-GEU thermostat housing (the 18R-G one fouls the plenum)

If you're using factory electronics, you will also need:
- ECU (duh)
- wiring harness
- airflow meter

You should also cut reliefs into the inlet ports for the injectors. Some people skip this step, but I'm sure Toyota put them there for a reason...

Actually I'm running no surge tank and a single EFI pump from a Camira. I know it's not ideal, but I've yet to experience fuel surge - and believe me, my Celica gets fanged around corners quite often! Smile

I've used the one fuel pump with my 2TGEU, never any surge, but never ran close to empty tank. The 1G would need more fuel though, I've been in a worked 2TG and a 3TG and they both surged on 1/8 tank, so you may be alright if you keep your tank above 1/2.

His exisiting ignition system will work fine. It's not a bad idea to upgrade to an electronic dizzy, but it's not essential - I ran my 18R-GEU on an old 18R-C points dizzy for quite a while and that was OK.
