Registering a write off Fri, 17 June 2005 02:13 Go to next message
Ladies and germs, the following is some information I have researched in the last 30 minutes.

*DISCLAIMER* All information in this post is based on Queensland laws and regulations. *DISCLAIMER*

First off there are two types of write offs, a statutory write off and a repairable write off.
A statutory write off can only be used for parts and can never be registered again. *whispers* In the case of old Celicas and such, the VIN number can easily be changed. *whispers*
A repairable write off can be registered after being repaired and inspected.

To find out if a vehicle is a statutory write off or a repairable write off, contact The Office of Fair Trading on 32461599.

If you decide to repair your repairable write off, contact QIS on 1300722411 to arrange a inspection.

I'll probably be looking into this in Perth in the coming week, so I'll post my findings here.

I think it will be exactly the same but I'm not saying this on the record.
I just rang the Transport Dept and they gave me the phone numbers. I then confirmed the information with both Fair Trading and QIS.

aiui, it is also the case in NSW.. my car was 'written off' twice, and i know of ppl whose car has been written offf many times Wink.

i see it as "insurance write off" ie cbf fixing old car..
and statutory write off = dangerous to re-register.

I think Stat. write offs can also occur if the compliance plate is missing, damage or tampered with.

Usally the comp plates on a stat write off are destroyed before they sell the wreck.

As for a repairable write off make sure you take photos of the car before you repair and keep all recipts to show where you got the parts from.
I know of one guy who went to rego the car after repairs only to find that someone had listed damage to the rear as well as the front by mistake.Only for the pics he had taken before and during repairs was he able to show that no damage to the rear exsited.
