1GGTE Factory Exhaust Help Needed

OK Guys,
I need to get a new exhaust for Tina's RA28 and I want to get it without a Catelitic Converter if I can legally.
I have the RTA folder hear and have given it a once over. What a Bastard of a book ! But anyway I need to comply with ADR 27A and basically it states I need to meet the emmision standards of the engine being fitted (as they superceed those of the car) Catelitic converter is only required if the DONOR vehicle had one as factory. So Did any of the Factory 1GGTE powered Vehicles come out without a cat ???
I don;t even know what models it came out in other than ther GA70 ? Anyone able to help out here ??
Thanks,

The 1G-GTE also came in the GZ2x Soarers.
Does it have to be 1G-GTE or can it be 1G-GE? Or 1G-E....

I was of the understanding that any unleaded petrol engine in japan needed a cat.
Which would mean that the 1g family needed them.
I think it would probably be better to put a cat on even if not needed. Might just save a tree or 2 for our kids to look at when they fly past them in seriouly quick toyotas in the future.
The high flow ones are not as restrictive as ppl say.
But they are expensive.
You definately need a cat to be legal in QLD.
Brett.

Max,
Mate it needs to be a 1G-GTE if I am going to get it passed the EPA.
Engineer won't be too big a hassel but the EPA can be so I want to make sure I keep it documented in the car, That way I will also get the engineer to state on the report that it does not need a cat Then we would be covered

Bugman,
Mate it deffinatly needs a Unleaded filler neck and sticker. The thing is I have spoken to a few people and everyone has a different opinion so I grabbed the book off a mate. Its a few years old but I appears to have all the updates.
It states I have to have the filler neck modded, an unleaded only sticker and the car has to be fitted with whatever emmisions equipment was released on the donor engine.
Engineers and others on the other hand have told me that since the 1G_GTE was not released in Australia it has no ADR's associated with it and therefore it reverts to the requirements for the year of the car ?? This is what has buggered It appears I can get it passed but it still won't really be legal and the last think I want is a fine from the EPA !
Its seems everyone says something different Hell the 4AGE form the showcar passed emissions because they don't have a standard for cars pre 1975 (even tho it was a late model engine with retrofitted carbies the based it on a 1973 model car !!!) and that was at the EPA itself !! Its just got me f#*ked !
If I had my way it would have a side pipe behind the front tyre and no mufflers at all ! (God they sound good with just a dump pipe and repsonsive WOW !)

OK heres more to add to the confussion ! Spoke to my engineer who has done all my cars
The car needs to pass the emmisions test for a 1977 Model vehicle ! regardless of the engine ! So it will be tested as a leaded car to the higher levels ! So it will pass hands down !
BUT he then said I still need a Cat as its unleaded ??
It also only has to pass the noise test for a 1977 model car
Thats his interpretation anyway !
Oh and there has been some discussion in regards to engineering costs lately.
To Engineer the whole car with Engine, gearbox, diff, brakes, wheels and Tyres, and suspension mods. $425 !
My only unexpected drama is getting a gearbox/diff place to write me a letter saying that in there opinion the current diff will cope or I'll have to do the upgrade now
Suspension travel may cause me a hassel too but I think I can get around that and I May need to borrow some rims (pretty sure they are too wide until I do the diff upgrade and get creative ! )
Will run it by another engineer or two and I'll keep you informed

for sure.
thoughs tests are the same as what the enginner I spoke to said, noise for a 1977 and emissions for a 1977, but I need to have all the standard emission controls that came with the motor still on it

hey rod, if you end up doing the hilux rear end and convert it to 4-stud would be interested on how u did it (maybe tech article or just have a look)
also if you stick with 5 stud would i be able to make an offer the RA28's existing front brakes?

If you are going to pass emmisions easily but require a Cat..... why not just install a slightly modified cat
Like one that has had a crow bar jammed through it.
Once the things hollow it should flow just as well as a peice of piping and keep the EPA happy too.

Remedy,
Mate I would never consider such a thing
And if someone was to I would suggest the accidental contact with a Crow bar be after the Emmision test just to be safe.
I actually think it is a good ide to ensure that the catelitic converter is flanged at both ends into the exhaust. That way it can be replaced easily when required to ensure all is working properly
Rob,
Mate will let you know all the details when we sort the Diff out. Will be remaining as a 4 Stud pattern tho

weld it up and redrilling aint that much of a dramma when you consider the outcomes of doing it.. you end up with a very strong diff. so dont be held bakc by somehting that if you dont want to do yourself will cost very little to have done.

For what it's worth, I have done the Hilux diff with disc brake rear end. Ed (ed ma61) now has pics of it. I think there will be a tech article on his website soon. I kept it 5 stud though.

I dont see how welding and redriling could be dodgy, unless done dogily. Do it properly or get someone to do it properly(the weld that is).
