Best Oil

Hi Fellas,
Heres the lowdown. I am currently using Castrol GTX3 mineral oil for my AE92SX.
Now my question is the follows.
1. I want nothing but the best for my motor! Should I switch to a Synthetic to maximise this? If so, is it ok for a car with 160000KMS on it?
2. If the answer is yes, what GRADES should I go for? I mean Mobil 1 for example is 10W-30. I am more leaning towards sticking to 15W-40. Bear in mind the KM my car has done and that it has no real oil leaks.
3. Finally what would be the best 3 brands to choose from out of the following?
Castrol
Valvoline
Penrite
Mobil
I guess what Im after is the BEST one.
P.S I live in Sydney so temperatures really only range from about 5 - 40 degrees celcius.
Thanks!!

Personally I think the GTX3 is fine, its more a matter of when you change the oil and the filter. If both are done good and regular, I really doubt you'll do anything magnificient but waste $ by using anything else.

The past two (Running) cars I've bought have had Valvoline in them. And white gunky paste all under the top of the rocker cover. Cleaned it up a bit & changed to Penrite and the insides of the motor have been spotless since, I use HPR 30 but you can also get 40 & 50 grades.
Does'nt seem to drop too much under stress either, unlike the Shell Helix I used once...
For 160k I'd say the 40 series should be OK

Most synthetis oils are pretty good, I am using Anglomoil Gold500 in my celica. It is a mineral oil, but really good quality and Australian owned. It also has some detergents in it to help keep things cleen.
Whatever you do, don't use valvolene, I wouldn't even trust it to lubricate shopping trolley wheels.

I've tried and tested many oils in my engines over the years and Penrite is the only one I use these days. Its proven and tested and has never failed on me.
I use Penrite HPR30 in my 2TG and Penrite turbo oil for my 3T GTE. I rebuilt my 2TG a couple years ago after driving with Penrite for nearly 150,000km and the main bearings were just about like new.
I tried Mobil 1 a while back and I didn't like it at all, its way too thin and doesn't provide the protection needed at startup.
So in my opinion, Penrite is the best oil.
The only other oil I like is Agip, but its pretty expensive.
Good luck,
Simon

I think before I decided to service my own car, the toyota place was putting in castrol.
But I decided I'm using Mobil 1 now. It has no problems starting, and gets to operating temperature pretty fast too. (I always baby the car until it's warmed up properly, turn off overdrive, only take it to 2 1/2 - 3000 RPM MAX before letting it change gears). It revs VERY nicely and has no problems keeping the revs up either.
But to add on to what mr_messy said, also don't do a rush job changing oil. Leave it sit there for a few hours to drain properly with each change. I always set aside a day to change the oil with. I start it to drain, then do all the other stuff, then putting the oil in is the last thing I do.

Mobil 1 10w-30 is specifically designed for the holden gen III 5.7ltr v8. Mobil 1 is available in 0w-40, 5w-40 and also 15w-50. It isn't too thin and it does give good start-up protection. Holden racing team use it, Porsche use and and we sell heaps of it so it must be crap.

My first oil change in the soarer I ran mobil 1 and didn't have any problems with it.
I just changed the oil and filter again and have put Penrite in this time. I can't really notice any differences between the two... we'll see what it looks like when I pull it out next time.
I think this is a much better way to make decisions on what oil you use. Oil isn't supposed to improve performance, it protects your engine from wear.
The mobil 1 looked pretty good when pulled out, but the Penrite was recommended and is a little cheaper too I think. Will have to let you know in about 8 weeks time when i do my next change.

Guys nice thread!
Ok it seems Mobil 1 and Penrite HPR15 are tossed as the most common choices.
But isnt penrite hpr15 a 15W-60 Oil? Well isnt 60 too thick for the multivalve twin cam motor?
and isnt mobil 1 10w-30? Wouldnt 30 be a little 'watery' for the motor?
Im using a 15w-40 grade and find the engine warms up quick however the 40 is only JUST thick enough. Its still quite watery.
What is the normal grade and thickness of the oil toyota recommended for the 4age when it came out?

as was mentioned earlier in the thread, mobil1 comes in several different viscosities. for example, the stuff I bought today (kmart didn't have penrite) was 15-50

I've used 5W-40 Mobil 1 for years. It works great. Cold starts are bad for the first half second though...
It's really thin and the car revs so much nicer with it. Haven't tried Penrite though and I won't... No use risking a change of oil type just for curiousity...

I initially used Repsol Fully Synth in the 100KW 4AGE (Previously used in the Soarer) and noticed the car was using oil...Have replaced the oil (1 week ago) with Penrite 15W-60 (HPR15?) and will see how that goes. I also opted for the same Penrite when we put the 1UZ into the Cressida - have done around 3000kms since with no real colour change thus far...again, will wait and see.

I agree completely with Nark! Mobil 1 is far and away the best oil. Have used it a bit and had no problems. It might cost a few dollars more but I am happy with the way it runs - nice'n'smooth!
All news groups discussing multivalve engines encourage the use of Mobil 1 as the additives in the oil help in keeping the internals clean.
If you are willing to spend a few dollars more I would stick to Mobil 1.

My car has a small rattle on startup on cold mornings for about 1 second that I don't like the sound of. Once it is going it is great. I am using a 15-40 (the Mobile XHP). I switched from their Synthetic Super S as that used to be 15-50 but is now 10-50 or something, which is a bit thin for the 198k on my engine.
What oil could I use to eliminate that rattle, yet have it still ok for the multi-valves etc? I feel like I want to still be running a X - 50, but am unsure. Do I stoop to a 20-50? But then I am worried about my valves etc...
Any help?
