Sprinter strut conversion Sun, 19 June 2005 06:01 Go to next message

can anyone recommend suspension specialists who can convert my sprinter struts to coilover if i supply all the parts???

i'm willing to freight my struts to wherever necessary aslong as its not overseas...

i tried calling up whiteline and noltec but they said they only manufacture the parts and don't do such conversions...

i'm thinking of buying coilover kit from noltec or fulcrum..

you dont need a specialist for that job, just go to any fabrication shop, that way you get it done for a sensable price

That should give you a good enough idea. Has some theory in there too.

You don't need a lathe - it just makes life easier, that's all!

i gave bilstein a call and he quoted me around $280 for shortening the struts, adding spacers etc.. is that a sensible price??

Just a quick question on spacers, when i had mine made up, they seemed to be just a couple of lumps of stock round bar cut to length, which is OK, but the inserts dont locate as well in the bottom of the tube as the originals, and can move about a mil or two each way. This is with no load on the shock insert. When the top locking ring is tightened up, there is no movement, but the shock could actually be sitting anywhere in that area.

I was thinking of getting some new spacers machined up which snugly fit around the bottom of the insert, so it is located much more positively.

I may be being fussy, but a mil or two movement to one side at the bottom of the tube, means the actual assembled strut/shock has a slight kink between the shock shaft and the strut body, which can effect your wheel alighnment, especially if it shifts under extreme loading.

to those who have 'em, what are your insert spacers like?

Im also interested in this spacer question. I gotta get some made up. Was going to use alloy and get it turned down, but to buy a 60mm by 40mm block of alloy costs a bit.

I think $280 is a joke, also spacers dont normally need to be run unless your cars unusually high or that your shocks are unusually short. I am using a 120mm shorter stroke and it still could be shorter.

Im using Tokico short strokes, which are the same size as many other short strokes, and im using a sproonter strut cut down 40mm with a 22mm spacer. This is a pretty common setup, and im interested to se what others use, without getting into the debate of weather one is necessary or not. as that subject has been covered before in club 4AG.

TOYBOYEE..Sorry for Hijacking the thread, i will start another if your not interested in this.

as far as I can tell Tocico's do need a spacer because they are of a really short stroke, all other shocks dont that I know of, well unless your car is like high

i'll do it for $100 if you include postage.

i'll need all parts, including dampers to get the stroke positioning right, and can have them done within a week.

cheers
steve

if they are only 60mm shorter then why on earth would u run spacers? I wish mine were 80mm shorter, then they would be ideal.
