padded steering wheel? stock steering whees for older cars like the ke' rollas and celicas and stuff dont have a padded wheel...thats crappy craptacular..
the first one the cops look for to my knowledge is if ur pod filter is enclosed or not...
a guy im sorta mates with has a worked rx7 and he got pulled up and cop said "hey can i have a look under the bonnet" this guy being the dumbass he is goes " oh shit yeh no worries" wantin to show it off..then he got defected for a few things...i wish i saw his face when the cop pulls out the book...lol

AFAIK different states have different laws.
magicmitch: I don't think the cop was actually asking him for a look at his engine bay, more likely to tell him to open it. I wonder if you need a warrant to search an engine bay?

yeh i know..im sure the cop had intentions of defect as soon as he saw the guy..but the owner thought that the cop was interested in the car and the goodies inside..and was more than happy to show the cop..
so pod filters r allowed to be exposed? i have/had an understanding that they must be enclosed like a box around it..some states could be different like davey said

lol Arch, I got pulled over by a power tripping Vic highway patrol on the way back from the AE86 meet.
He was hassling me big time about the pod not being sealed, and I told him that it had been through Regency twice and was perfectely legal and had paper work to prove it.
He just couldnt get his head around it... worst cop I have encountered I have never been defected here in SA, ever.

that is some slack shit! when will cops be trained as mechanics so that they can hand out a defect for real instead of this hogus shit they try and put on us. also how to harleys get away with their exhaust noise? and if bovs are noise pollution what about compression braking?

firstly...
Harleys do get defected, my cousin has been done three times for too loud on his.
I am happy that cops arent trained as they would then know what too look for on a car not just bogus crap which ends up only being a cop shop defect
bovs arent noise pollution, they affect emmissions, thats why they are illegal

bov's are supposed to only effect emissions on an afm car not a map sensored car.
Bikes are allowed to be louder most probably because they have less room in which to house mufflers etc.
i think they do train cops in what to look for on defective cars the problem is not the police the problem is the people who drive arround the same block 300 times a night with sound systems thumping, blow off valves venting and noisy induction/exhausts and people who drive arround on makita or ryobi susspension.

Pod filters must be covered.
also cars with after market steering wheels need to be padded. if before IIRC 1970 then its fine as those steering wheels, stock are bare metal.
there is a whole booklet and if you want it check the vicroads site.
i got defected for old plates that were cracked ( Police said it wasnt my fault, its the manufacturers fault), one rear brake light out, one number plate out and my steering wheel. i asked the cop how thick does the padding have to be, answer: dont know. asked my inspection officer, same answer. anyone here know?
btw i wasnt speeding or anything, its just that my plates were old and crackly. and yes done in a camry.

The one and only time that I've been Defected was in my little truck. Going down to the Summernats year before last, the tail lights that come standard on my truck don't have a reflector in them like the new ones do. So I fitted a nice amber one on each rear corner, since it's yellow I thought it would look better.
Wrong, I got my defect. and was told rear=RED,side=AMBER,forward=WHITE.
The funny part thou they tried for about 6 other things, but I showed them my engineers report and the things that they were trying for were not relevant being a truck.

The problem with blow off valves relates to the crankcase ventilation system, which is required to be sealed (can't remember what year this is from). Fumes etc are plumbed into the intake system for burning by the engine, vented blow off valves allow these fumes to escape.

I think the 3 mentioned by the thread starter may be legit causes. If the seatbelts were infact frayed then I think its fair, if not then I agree its a load of shit.
Steering wheels are debatable, without knowing whats wrong with it cant comment. If it was too small or similar then they should have checked previously.
Unsecured battery is fair enough too, if you are going to go flogging around with it not secured you are asking for trouble. We forgot to do it up on a ke55 bush basher a few years ago, it slid enough so that the positive terminal grounded through the peice of metal that is supposed to hold it there. Resulted in smoke a partially melted battery. Could of ended up much worse!

I get defected in NSW when my cars registered and legal in QLD,
The cop said if I want to drive on the roads in NSW I have to meet there standards and regulations. They got me for Tyres, Oil leaks that weren't their, Pod style filter and free flow muffler. I just went back to qld got a roadworthy certificate and sent it to them. I didn't fix or change anything.
Then peeled the sticker of myself.
Then I got pulled over again by the same copper that defected me the first time and he did nothing. But he seemed a bit pissed off.
