sucking in water through air filter

I would like to mount my air filter between my bumper and radiator support on my sprinter. Now this was all good but I have a friend who has a pod in the position of his original air box on his ae-82 and he has a problem of it sucking in a heap of water whenever he goes though some puddles. This makes me wonder what it will be like with my filter mounted up the front. Do you guys think I will have my car die on me when I am traveling on the road behind a vehicle in heavy rain? Heres some pics I have of my splash gaurd and dummy fit of my filter:

I will also add some details in my worklog shortly.

I'd say rain would be ok but driving thru puddles might cause you greif.
just remember that water is harder to compress than air so if the engine sucks in water it could totally stuff the internals of your engine.
I suppose you'd have to weigh up the risk of a new engine compared to gaining a few hories which could also be gained with a better design.
Not to meantion the attension you'll get from police with a fu@k off air pod that they can defect you for even without popping the bonnet.

I've seen it done plenty of times, and even been guily of doing it to my own car, once. It does tend to cop water, dirt, etc. a lot, guess it's partly a matter of where you tend to drive. It's always important to not have big shiny silly looking lampshade filters obvious to your local constable - they often don't share the passion...

yes I didnt mention that I was going to make a black air duct that covers the top and back of it by wrapping it around the filter. It would be black and would make it less obvious. I am thinking now maybe still keep it up the front but tuck it behind the bumper opening more, if I am really keen maybe mayeb make a duct that channels air towards it, althogh I am sure that would have some trivial effects.
oh and yes I know that a hyraulic lock smashes the living shit out of everything, i beleive its normally the rods that bend..

well.... a filter like that will not pass a lot of water thru it quickly.. even if you fully submerged it in water when the car was running, you are more likely to starve the engine of air before you get hydraulic lock.. (you could try it and see whaty happens ) i think the water prob is more that the water obstructs the air from passing thru and so motor cannot get sufficent air to run, as opposed to water passing thru the filter and stopping the engine due to ingested water.
the splash guard looks good, and ducting/obscuring from view would also be good ..
how noisy will it be with the filter at the front of the car?

the splash gaurd was made for aerodynamic reasons but yeah it should help with water too. As for noise I have no idea, did I mention this was going to be feeding some quads?

Is it a K&N? They are quite noisy. Having said that, there is nothing wrong with a bit of induction roar

yes well spotted, why do you think they are noisier? is it because they are so unrestrictive? I think I will like the induction roar so long as it's not too bad when i am cruising around town.

the induction noise shouldnt be loud when your driving normally only when you put the engine under load and rev it a bit but cruizing should be no worries

LOL not exactly.
the noise comes from sound waves bouncing around in the intake tract... when a wave hits the end of the pipe that is open to air, it generates a wave outside as well (just your usual open-end pipe theory) unless you do something to chop up these waves first (stock way is to have changing size and shape box to dampen any standing waves) it will be louder.
if you are tuning the intake also (the quads i mean) when you generate a standing wave, you generally increase the amplitude of the sound also... but thats a nice sound

My car has a bit of a sucking noise under strain but you have to be outside to hear it.
Also my pod filter is wet most of the time but i knew it couldn't suck water into the intake anyway so all i did was move it out of the direct stream of rain, I've noticed no difference at all

just thought i would add my little story to this post. had a cold air intake pipe 5" or something similar size on my 162 3sgte, then after a couple of days heavy rain turbo doesnt seem to be making power as easily as it was previously. pull the thing off and there are 3 blades on the intake about half the size they used to be. took it to a turbo rebuilding place (cant remember the place) and asked what he thinks happened to it. he replies " bet u have one of those cold air intakes dont ya mate?", yeah why i say, " cause you have had a fair f*&%^en bit of water hit this thing".
thats my story, but you shouldnt have any of these probs considering you dont have a hair dryer.
