icon4.gif  4AGE Hunting at idle and really high idle. Sun, 19 June 2005 13:47 Go to next message
When I converted my 4AGE from FWD to RWD I didn't hook the waterlines back up to the inlet manifold cause it was too much mucking around, this resulted in the idle up valve being constantly open and the lowest idle I could get was 2000rpm.
The problem was finally finally fixed yesterday.
All you have to do is screw off the cold idle control thingy from the bottom of the throttle body.
Trace it out on a piece of aluminium cut it out and also cut a gasket to match(trust me from experience, it will not work at all without a gasket!), drill up matching holes and get some sealant and screw inplace of old idle control valve.
Problem solved.
Mess with the idle screw to get it where you want it and your away!
When the car is cold you will have to keep your foot on the gas pedal untill it warms up a bit and then it will be fine.
I will take some pics soon to make it a bit more understandable if it doesnt make sense.
Thanks to shinybluesteel for coming up with this solution and even more thanks to Joel (TurboRA28) for cutting and fitting the plate for me.

Now for the hunting at Idle problem...
For me this was due to the Throttle Position Sensor not being aligned properly.
To fix this all you have to do is:
loosen the two screws holding the TPS in place
get a multimeter and adjust the TPS untill you get the readings in the table below...

Sorry I wouldnt have a clue how to explain that table or how to do it all, I had a mate do it for me.
Maybe if someone who reads this and understands all this can explain it properly.
once again thanks to Joel (TurboRA28) for doing this for me.

my part of the solution will work without a gasket, but it is easier with one. i broke my gasket so i didnt have any choice, just used lots of RTV sealant.

my only addition is that you use the blanking plate in place of the gasket, but bolt the idle up together as per usual, so it is all there, its just all blocked up. this will allow you to clamp it doen hard and reduce the chance of air leaks.

i fixed a car with this problem recently, it still hunts but at lower RPM. I took some photos that i can put in this thread, if we can organise some reliable webspace. looks like i will be fixing it some more.

you can fix your car too clayton, sounds easier than tuning a PS2 laser
