Battery Cutoff Switch Mon, 20 June 2005 00:01 Go to next message
Hey everyone

How do you install a battery cutoff switch, like a kill switch

but I just want the battery not the fuel pump or ignitor JUST the actual battery.

what do I need? and where can I buy them?

I want a switch that I can mount inside the car.

thanks

So you want to be able to isolate the battery from the system?

specialist battery shops stock them. I was going to get mine from a place called "all about 12 volts" here in syd, no idea if they're national. in the end, I couldn't be arsed with the cutoff switch.

Yes I want to isolate the battery
so I can have a switch to turn it off inside the car if I want to.

I've read that you also connect the alternator so when you turn it off you dont wreck the alternator so the switch has a connection for the alternator.

The alternator thing sounds like someone who had no idea about auto electronics...

Why would you want to isolate the battery from in the cabin? And why do you need to isolate the battery to begin with?

You can get isolation switches that go ON the battery, it's basically another battery clamp for the +12v.

the reason for turnin of the alternator is because on new cars these days theres so many relays and crap

and the alternator and some thermo fans when spinin cause a tiny voltage to still run thru the system and its enough to keep relays on even when batt key is off

so by disconnecting alternator at same time as battery the engine will not keep running

this is a common prob on new cars

some battery switches these days have 2 big terminals for bat cable

then 2 or 4 small terminals for coil power so it cuts power to coils and the engine stops
