TA22 Rust hotsopts? Mon, 20 June 2005 16:33 Go to next message
going to so look at a TA22 in the next few days as a bit of a project car.

my question is: whats areas of trouble for these cars? rusting?
I know the *a6* celicas alllllllll have rust in the hatch.

any other things specific to this car to look out for?

Thanks..

Hi,

Check the sills under each side of the car (beneath the doors). Check the doors, specially down along the bottom - if the drain hole is blocked then water accumulates in the door and starts to rust it. Check around the front and rear window trim 'cos they can rust there a fair bit.

Look under the car to see if there is no diff oil or transmission oil splattered about the place and the floor looks good. Also good to check under the carpets to make sure there's no rust holes in the floor. Check the engine bay to see if there's oil or water leaks, general cleanliness and no leaking brake or clutch fluid.

If you see any bubbles in the paint then push on it 'cos it usually denotes rust underneath. When pushed the bubble breaks away to reveal our old enemy, iron oxide, eating the metal underneath.

If you want to get serious take a small magnet with you and run it over the car, though don't scratch the paint with it. This will help you find any patches of bog repairs.

check the rear quaters, at each side of the boot, the drainage plugs there seem to get clogged quite easily, and makes for a very wet n shitty environment.

also, check the underside of the parcel shelf, and as river said, the bottom of the doors and panels.

the seals of my boot were also well ravaged aswell.

checklist:
Bottom of doors
Bottom of Rear Panels (both side of the inside of the boot)
Bottom of front fenders
The Sills underneath the doors (that run along the side of the car, where side skirts would be fitted)
Where the boot seal attatches

and anywhere where it looks like new paint, check carefully, there has to be a reason why its new Smile

Another common spot for rust on a TA22 is the leading edge of the bonnet. Usually rust bubbles are visible in the corners where the bonnet meets near the indicators.

The slightest bit of rust along the sills (like unbroken bubbles) is ALWAYS worse than it looks!
Never look at it and think "it doesnt look too bad", because it is bad.

Where the front fenders sit over the sill is a trouble spot.
If the fender has rust in the corner (even if its only a little), the rust has probably already consumed quite a lot of the sill behind it.
