Damn Toyota!

Why is it, that Toyota charge so much for their parts??? The boots off the steering rack on my Celica XX (Mk2 Supra) are going, with one already dead...Repco and Coventrys don't sell aftermarket ones that are actually big enough...the price for them if they did...$18.50 each.
Toyota on the other hand should be able to get me a pair...the price? $71.25...EACH!!!!
WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? Do the Toyota ones have gold seals or something?? Its a chunk of rubber!

$71 for that aint so bad when you compare it to a guy rang TOYOTA for a replacement gearknob for his GT4 and they quoted him $250.

The reason is because they are imported parts from Japan... All Toyota parts are brought over from Japan...
Just today at work actually, I needed a price on a Land Cruiser centre console lid... I am not joking here... Just the plastic lid with hinges, $550... NO SHIT...

You can thank the current tariff regime that protects our local industry for those high prices.
Personally it is about time GMH and Ford Australia stood on their own two feet, as they are no longer infant industries.
There was a plan to reduce the tariffs on the automotive industry and this was to begin in 2000 and gradually be reduced to near 0 by 2008. But the car industry has some friends in high places.........

well, that small piece of metal "skin" of the Celica sunroof is in the high $700s, I think I can get it made in gold for that price.. Have you tried asking about suspension components like lower control arms etc.? Power windows switches are only $300 something, but similar switches from Nissan would be in the high $400s, so Toyota isn't the most expensive guy around!

Frank, are you a mechanic?
You will find that Coventrys favours mechanics.
So, if you aren't a mechanic, call them and pretend you are. If you can get an business account with Coventrys, they'll look high and low for you.
Would the mk2 supra boots be similar to the mx73s? stabbing in the dark here...

Not sure if they are the same as the MX73...I do know they are bigger than any aftermarket ones Coventry's had though

BUGMAN:
i have a soarer with 1g-gte, so the same engine as you.
But anyway, i only got 1 gasket and it turns out i don't need it anyway.
So while we are on the topic, why don't we list any good, cheap reliable places that stock toyota spares in your area.
I have none, hehe.

you buggers should get a Mits or a Suzuki, i work for a dealership in bris that sells mitsubishi, suzuki, hyundai and saab, U aint seen nothing,
a timing belt for a NJ/NJ quad cam 3.5L pajero is $250
a fuel filter for an EFI vitara is about $100
the air conditioning pollen filter for a V6 Grand vitara is $110
for a little dash bulb that light up the "D" in the auto sequence is $10 EACH
yet a turbo for a SAAB 9 3 is onlt $900 retail, its a Garrett GT15 {I think}, on a 2.3l engine it starts to boost at 1900 rpm and can boost all dat at 15 psi but can have short bursts {20 sec} to 20 psi
SAAB call it their acceleration overboost feature
