my 4age is idling at 2800-4000, this obviously sucks ass and is not supposed to be happening, does anyone have any suggestions as to where the problem might lie? (idle screw behind throttle is all the way down, throttle is closed)

i've done a bit of reading and i found something that was a bit interesting, it suggests that my problem could be because my distributor is sticking at a level of advance suitable for a higher engine speed, eg when i rev the advance changes to suit the engine speed or something and perhaps the distributor is stuck from a time when i revved the engine hard, does this sound correct to you guys? Confused if this is the case is a new distributor the best option or should i try to fix my current one?, thanks for any replies..... Very Happy

I don't know that it would have to do with the timing sticking, as the 4A-GE has all electronic ignition, no mechanical bits to get stuck.
One thing it could be is the idle up valve on the underside of the throttle body. It acts as a bypass valve for when the motor is warming up, this part could be faulty/sticking, but this is also where all the idle up hoses for air-con & power steering etc, so check that none of these connections have any leaks.

ok, i'll list my symptoms,
- sticky throttle from idle
- bit of pinging
- idle works fine sort of high but below 1200, until you give it a flogging, after half an hour or so driving then it wont drop down past 2800 or more

i recently messed about with my camshafts and as such also removed and reinstalled my dizzy, at one point i noticed smoke coming from the dizzy and there is also a minor oil leak through it. either way it seems like it needs replacing and the problem only occurred after i removed and reinstalled the dizzy, i've checked the idle up and everything is as it was before i had any problems. i'm getting a sore brain but if there is anyone who can give me some advice that would be sick, thanks

when your car idles pretty high, (try this when it's safe), put your foot "under" the gas pedal, and lift the gas pedal "up", and see if the idle drops back down, if it does, the throttle butterfly is sticking, 4000rpm idle doesn't seem to make sense, even if the idle up valve is open..

if its pinging then you might have advanced your cams when you were fiddling? i'd be checking your timing above all else...and then look at other factors...

the oil leaking past your dizzy can be fixed by renewing a O ring on the shaft of the dizzy - get one from toyota.

also, might help if you check the diags for your ECU - see if any codes come out?

If you pulled your dizzy out and didn't re-phase it exactly, then you might have set a high base ignition advance which would explain the pinging. Get a timing light and set the base timing. On the stock ECU, you have to short two pins together on the diagnostic connector to force the ECU fire at what it thinks is 10 degrees BTDC. Adjust your dizzy until the timing light shows 10 BTDC.

You might also have a manifold leak which could cause the RPM to go high. Ignition advance alone would only get you a few hundred RPM increase, so it sounds like you have air bypassing your throttle too. If the air bypasses your AFM (assuming yours is AFM), then you will get lean mixtures too which also leads to pinging.

Hope this helps.
