Sure, the US Grand Prix was a farce and a blunder of monumental proportions for Formula One, but now, after providing no other recourse than withdrawal from the race by the Michelin-shod teams, F1 is threatening to punish those teams for breaking F1 rules. The FIA is claiming that the teams who pulled out just before the race broke at least one rule and potentially damaged the Formula 1 reputation. The charge is that the teams 'wrongfully refused to allow [their] cars to start the race'. BAR Honda is facing an especially hard time with this stance by the FIA since they are under a 12-month probation following the fuel-tank-within-a-fuel-tank violation earlier this season. If the FIA decided to punish BAR Honda, it could face a 6-month suspension. I would love to see this resolved in a reasonable manner that would err on letting people race. It would be ridiculous to suspend BAR Honda for following a course of action recommended for safety reasons.

Agreed, but the FIA rules are clear where they state that if a vehicle isn't going to race the FIA must be notified 24hours before the race. Worse case the Team can notify the FIA no later then 45mins before start if they have a non-starting vehicle.
The issue, from what I've read, is that the FIA received no such notification, and the cars just pulled into the pits after the warm-up lap.
I'm not saying I agree with the banning of Teams for 6 months and all that jazz, I'm just stating the rules. It's unfortunate that all this will be fought out in the legal arena, rather than on the race-track.
If anything, the Michelin teams should be kicking Michelin from one end of the country to the other end for putting them into such a situation, letting them down with poor tyres, threatening their championship points and all other losses and embarrasment thier trye sponsor has caused them.

i was under the belief that a letter from a supplier for all teams advising that they could not compete is the equiverlant of 7 individual letter reuiring a 700% increase in manpower if not more to process
