18RG into RA23

Hi Guys
I have an RA23 with an 18R-C in it. I also have an 18RG that i want to put in it's place. I've had a look at the two engines and there's some obvious differences. Intake on opposite side, dizzy in diff. spot and radiator hose in diff. spot too. I'm relatively new to the game though i do have some experience with top end rebuilds, never changed engines though!!
I have solex carbys, pacemaker extractors, choice of elec. or points dizzy, running in-car 18R-C and of course ready-to-run 18RG.
Can anyone send me a basic guide to follow, any pics of the engine bay layout with 18RG installed or know where i can get a manual to do this. I have a Toyota 18RG service manual but it doesn't give engine bay layouts.
Basically any help would be fantastic! Feel free to PM me!
Cheers, Pomey

as the bottom of an 18r is essentially the same (exceptions being the actual internals, but the block is bolt hole equivalent), there shouldn't be too much involved.
i would be happy to help you swap the physical engine over if you like depending on when you want to do it and where you are.
the only thing i can think of off the top of my head would be the accelerator cable would be different.
you might need to extend a few wires (oil pressure sensor, etc.), vaccuum lines and you could suss out a top radiator hose fairly easily at sprint auto i would say. but other than that...easier than changing the head over i would say (mainly cos it would also involve all the internals in the bottom end as well.)
could be done in a day assuming you had everything ready to swap over, and the 18rg was running fine.
also i am assuming this is an 18rg(u) and not an efi one 18rgeu
do you have another car to drive round in while you do this (knowing that there is always something you need but can't get)???

Thanx for replyin mate
I been havin a look over it today and i have to agree, it doesn't look too involved. It's an 18RGU head on 18R block.
I have just got the car this week so still gettin my head around it. I have a Subaru to drive as i plan to restore the RA23 over the next 7 months or so. I want to have it ready, time and money permitting, for the Adeliade Toyoshow next feb.
I don't plan on putting the engine in for a few months. I'm gonna pull the 18R out to salvage a few parts of it for the 18RG. A few of the head to block bolts are missin etc so i'll get it running on the engine stand first plus respray the engine bay too.
The exhaust seems in good nick so i'm hoping to get the extractors fitted to the existing one. Main problems i'm gonna have will be the carbys and emmision controls i think.
Any help would be great, thanx for the offer, i'll PM ya when i'm closer to the date. At the mo i'm just getting all the preperations ready. No point leavin everythin til the last minute.
Cheers, speak to u soon, Pomey!
