(Note to mods: sorry if this is in the wrong spot, I think it's about right!)
Hey all, just letting any of you PC car racing enthusiasts know there's a relatively new game called Richard Burns Rally. The physics are absolutely amazing, and the gameplay is really fun and extremely challenging.
The suspension calculations that it makes in realtime are huge, it'll be playing with how long your steering arms are, how long your springs are, and their resistance, if there's a helper spring etc, torsion of your swaybars and so on.
The power generation (how it works it out) is really good too, it actually calculates air flow by the size of the turbo wheel, the turbo housing size, the inlet manifold size, and compensates for intercooler loss and so on.
So if any of you are into rally, and have a higher end spec computer (this game requires per pixel shading) Try it out. A wheel is pretty much a must, with pedals that can brake and accelerate at the same time (split axis).
It's the closet to pushing a WRX to its limits on a rally course i've ever been!
enjoy.

Yeah I had FIA GTR since like the german release, it's, in my opinion, crap and unrealistic.
it's also an emulation made to feel right, not a simulation that's fun to play!

So what do you call a realistic car sim then?
NFS?

Richard Burns Rally.
that's a realistic sim.
NFS UG2 is arcade, and knows it's arcade.
FIA GTR could've been so much better.
Grant.

I'm with you Grant! I put RBR on every time that I get a chance. I bought it for $40 NEW at EB and its the best game I have! Listen to this man he knows what he's talking about!
This is what I posted over at OzCelica a few months ago:
Quote: | For those of you that haven't played this game I know what you are thinking... Its relatively unknown, its probably just another dud.
How very wrong could you be! I can't put this game down. I bought it from EB for $39.95 ( ) after playing it only briefly on my brothers PS2, now just about every time I'm bored at home I put it on to drive the tarmac stages, it feels like I'm in Targa Tasmania.
If you are big on sim games like me, this is the only choice for a good rally-esque driving game... I guess its comparable to the original V-Rally in a way that it feels unique with its unrivalled physics. I've yet to play another point-to-point driving sim that even comes close to RBR. You find yourself playing it over and over, on one end of the scale if you drive well, you'll find yourself smiling from ear-to-ear, but on the other hand, if you F#@K up big, you'll still find yourself smiling from ear-to-ear thanks to the spectacular physics engine. Its a real art form to get through a stage neatly and you'll find that you keep going back to watch the replay and see what corners you perfected.
Anyone who's tried this game, tell me what you think, anyone that hasnt tried it, go away and have a crack somewhere and tell me what you think too. I don't reckon anyone will be disappointed. Just a word of warning, its not like Need For Speed Underground and Burnout its about simulating real-life and your not going to be able to 'pimp' out your ride or put NOS on your beast, however you will be able to adjust everything such as tire pressure, camber, ride height, gear ratios and EVERYTHING else.

The only problem I have with it, is that it's absolutely RUINED all other racing "games" for me.
Just knowing what it does makes it so much cooler! ah.
You really gotta try it with a quality (see: logitech) wheel and 5.1 surround (or better) sound.
With TV-out to a 80 cm tv.. well, it's fun!
GET RACIN!

As good as it is, its game play is quite limited.
It only kept me interested for a few weeks.
Where i have been playing GTR and NetKar on and offline for at least 6 months now.

Personally I don't think so... I've played the tarmac stage in the Richard Burns Rally countless times that I can now beat Burns time by more than 5 seconds!
Every single stage in the game has different personality, you actually pass the rolling hills in the background, you can see the road extend into the horizon for literally miles on the fast sections and really predict when you can push the limit. The way the car reacts over the rises and the dips is second to none. Thats where the lasting appeal is for me, in the variety of stages, not the ridiculous amount of similar stages. I'm hanging out for Richard Burns Rally 2.
Let me just say that you don't need 500 cars and 70 odd variations of courses in a game to make it good. This game is a good example. I saw it in EB for $25 brand new on the weekend during their sale, its a BARGAIN!

Richard Burns Rally is the best racing sim to date
and is auctually closer to driving a real rally car then what people might think, and its the only game where when you're driving fast, it feels fast.
Ben.
