icon10.gif  MZ20 running too rich? Mon, 27 June 2005 08:18 Go to next message
Hey all!
My MZ20 is playin silly buggers. Only just got it a few weeks ago and its doing some curious things. Firstly, it starts ok when cold (takes a little bit of jollying along) but when you start it warm it burps and farts and runs on like 5 or 4 cylinders for about 10 seconds or so. That is i assume thats whats happening as its running all lumpy. Next, it is absolutely DEVOURING petrol, like ridiculous amounds and the exhaust smells like petrol. I think its running pretty rich. ANy ideas how to correct this? Also the oil is a bit overfull from the last owner who didnt have a clue, and i havent gotten around to an oil change, this may be the cause of the rough startup i spose. Any ideas??

Im not real sure, but i put about 35 litres in it the other day and prolly did not much over 150k's before it was back down low again. I havent tested to see how long a tank lasts... It may be normal i spose, but it is very thirsty and the exhaust smells of petrol pretty bad. Also it seems to be bogging down a bit under acceleration.

Possible problems are bad spark, causing you to use more throttle.

Leaking injector, or leaking cold start injector.

Or bad o2 sensor.

So what would you suggest? Where can i find the o2 sensor? Should i try cleaning it or something? New plugs and leads i spose are also a good idea. Where can i get leads and a new o2 sensor for a 7mgte??

Could always go down to a spare parts store and try there eh? Or even Toyota themselves.

o2 sensor wont help running rich at idle.

If you haven't had the injectors cleaned in the last few years, remove them, and get them cleaned.

That would be step 1 for me.

ok, that sounds like a plan. It dosent seem to be running rich at idle, i rekon the problem with starting will be something to do with too much oil in the engine. Where could i get injectors cleaned? I guess a mechanic of some description... Sorry if these seem like dumb questions, but im pretty new to this.
Cheers for the help too guys!
