Soarer 1988-89 Opinions ?

Heya guys, ive been saving and saving and am willing to sell my celica and get a Soarer
the 1988 - 89 Model(s) are my fav -
i love the box look as i did with my RA65, but what i didnt love with the RA65 is the RUST ISSUES and general shit that pissed me off with it (but u get that)... with all of these model soarers around i havent seen one with rust on it or anything obvious to me that is fuxed with them either
anyway .. im wanting to know what are the main problems/generic problems that these model soarers have . coz now my RA65 is rust free (basically) i can keep it and have no problems (fingers crossed) but if there are little problems with these soarers i would LOVE to get one
so go ahead and bag them for what they are worth to see if you can convince/unconvince me to get one.
cheeeeeers

'nuff said
They are very fine cars, the 7MGTE (MZ20 soarer) ones have the same associated issues all 7M toyotas have, but the rest of the car is basically the same as the GZ20 1G-GTE soarer, which is a very solid engine from what i've read about it. (unless you let stradlater or MR-1JZ use one! )
Only thing it's lacking is a bit of power.... in its stock form anyway.
They seem to come in a variety of levels of trim, some have leather interior, tan dash, some have black dash and interior (like mine), if you can get one with a bodykit, do so, as the standard bodykit seems fairly highly prized and rare, cause so many soarers DONT have it
mine doesnt really have any serious rust problems anywhere, but leaves can get into the front quarter panels so check in there for any rust from decomposing leaves etc.
Try and get yourself a manual one, save yourself the journey I'm doing now (unless you want an auto one??)
The MZ21 soarer is the 7MGTE soarer, except with air suspension. the MZ21 GT Turbo Limited is a very very nice car... ones i've seen have TV's, leather interior, bodykit, and overall look like REAL nice plush cars... almost like a two-door crown, hehehe
Height controllers and stuff are available for the air suspension so if you're after something more cushy I guess that would be the way to go.
Just... look around.... choose wisely. I thought mine was a great buy but then found i got absolutely shafted price wise. I paid 6400 for mine... there's nothing really too wrong with it... just needs a respray. and a kit. and a manual transmission to replace the tired auto one. and new suspension. Meh!
Look around and you'll find some really awesome ones... They are a great car to drive... they definitely have a SOLID feeling to them, definitely dont feel flimsy, they feel like very confident cars to drive and even mine with its boaty suspension feels fairly sure of itself on the black top, and I really enjoy it.
I hope you decide to get one! add another one to the ranks!
Cheers
James

hehe .. thanks for that Merudo im going through the soarer thread now (at work) and they all look so tasty..
with the 6 CYL engine it will be enuf for my power loving and if its turbo or Twin Turbo will just ad to the fun. as i am coming from the 4 CYL 22RE in my RA .. i mean i love my RA but its just pissing me off . it seems like its a piece of tin and a soarer is a pylon of steel
do they blow head gaskets ?
does ANYTHING on them rust Easy?
is there certain things to look for when getting one?
and is 6k about the range ill be looking at ? for the 89-88 models ?
cheers

After noticing your location, I'm not sure how many soarers are around in perth or if you would find difficulty getting one over there, but $6k should get you a nice one. $6400 got me a fairly average one... but I'm looking upon it as a project for me to do
7MGTE ones, like nearly all 7M motors, will QUITE POSSIBLY (wont say 100%, because you may not have to) require the head gasket to be replaced at some stage. As far as I know from factory the heads of these arent torqued down enough and that causes premature gasket failure, and pitting of the block and alloy head.
the 7MGTE MZ20, MZ21 is the 3.0L single turbo.
the 1G-GTE GZ20 soarer is the 2.0L twin turbo.
I've got a GZ20, the 2.0L twin... while not quite as fast as the 7MGTE one I can breathe easier regarding the head gasket situation... These seem to be fairly hardy engines!
the 1G-GTE's CT12 steel wheeled turbos can push a fair bit of boost as well, without worry about turbine failure because they are steel and not ceramic.
Can't comment on the 7MGTE one though, sorry.
You're right about how solid they feel though.... I dont get any rattles or anything, she still feels nice and solid and tight... not loose or rattly at all
As far as rust is concerned, check the B pillars near the windows. Check the drain passages for water alongside the boot lid, and check the drain at the bottom of the front windscreen (youll need to lift the bonnet)
Check in the wheel wells as well
There are a few soarers in perth, maybe one of em can give you a guided tour, im sure theyd love to show off their car to another prospective soarer owner
BTW, i say the 1G lacks power, but the 88-89 model ones should have a Generation 3 1G-GTE in it, that still puts out 210 horsepower at the crank in stock form, so i guess it aint that bad... just a little slow off the line because it has to get so much weight moving.
Being a manual would alleviate most of that issue though!
I do not believe the 20 series soarer (MZ20, MZ21, GZ20) came out in a non-turbo version. I may be wrong, but I've never seen a factory N/A *20 soarer.
Hope I have been of assistance!
Cheers
James

if u want it just as a cruiser any engine would be alright.
if u wanna play a little i wouldnt go 1ggte, they dont have the torque needed to make fat car feel quick
7mgte would be best bet
1jz even better
2jz even better again

Once fiddled with and made a manual the 1G should be right though, shouldn't it?
Or should I just forget all my plans and save for a 1J ? *sigh*

They are very nice cars,
My house mate has a GZ20 (1g-gte) and its very nice.
It is almost indestructable, that 1ggte keeps going and going, with the abuse it cops .
Top car all round, feel very solid when you drive em
