I was woundering how to tell 2TG cams apart? I just got a TA22 and it came with a heap of spares, including 2 sets of 2TG cams. the numbers on the cams are the same execpt for the last no. they are: xxxxxxxx220 and xxxxxxxx222. i was wanting to know a bit about them like what duration and lift they both are? aparently one set is the standard set and the other are a mild set. any help would be great!!!! You need a somekinda jig fixture where rotate them camshafts. (Having them installed in an engine block works - naturally). Then you need a degree wheel and a dial gauge. Equipped with these you can find out every aspect there is to know about camshafts.
Except maybe country of origin Smile

I recently ran into two american 6-cyl cams. I friend needed to know what they were. While he made up a jig for rotating them on a table, I used my time to make up a rough degree wheel out of suitable stuff I found in a garage.

I always make proper TDC marking on engine block/crank sprocket. Ignition and cam timing marks are filed onto crank pulley. This way I myself have no need for a degree wheel at all.
This way it's a real low-labour effort to change cam timing, when for example making comparison runs on a chassis dyno. No way to accomplish that with a degree wheel system.

Who is to say whether they've been re-ground after code stamping.

Also - with a dial gauge we can double check the cam for possible grinding mistakes done by lobe grinder.
To what I've been told, it's not totally unheard of having differences in duartion/lobe separation between cams in a same camshaft. Camshafts are mass products, mistakes do happen.

I went through my re-ground Toyota cam. Class product. Everything was within specifications. Now I sleep better.

supposing the guy who owned the engine before you did the cheap thing and just swapped the #222 cam for a #220 cam (which have a lower lift, longer duration), then they should be-

#220-
Cam Shaft:
Lobe Height In 45.87 ~ 45.97
Lobe Height Ex 45.87 ~ 45.97
Cam Lift:
In 9.82
Ex 9.82

#222-
Cam Shaft:
Lobe Height In 46.37 ~ 46.47
Lobe Height Ex 46.37 ~ 46.47
Cam Lift:
In 10.27
Ex 10.27
