Steering wheel suggestions?
|
Thu, 30 June 2005 03:35

I'm looking for a new steering wheel. At the moment I only have the stock MA61 wheel, and maybe it's just me but it feels like I'm driving a bus when I try to turn the wheel fast on counter steers etc., and the moulded style of grip just feels horrible and unstable (it has little ribs all the way 'round).
I haven't yet found a Momo steering wheel that I like, or a Sparco. I'd seen a few Isotta's that looked interesting, but still not perfect, and they are proving near impossible to get a hold of (went to the local racing gear shop, and was informed that they had *never* even heard of Isotta). Autobarn wheels just make me laugh.
I would like a wheel without mouldings at all, or at least not on the outside; I don't want to feel the dips and curves of the different 'sections' of the wheel, as you would in this one;
Even the most simple Momo steering wheel I could find had crazy moulding bulges at the bottom;
I'd also prefer 320mm and not 350mm, leather and not polyurethane...and certainly not a D or hex shape..
Something like this would be perfect if it wasn't for the separation of the top part of the grip;
Isotta's Desert and Rally wheels appeal to me fundamentally, but not visually...if I'm going to be coughing up half a grand for a steering wheel, I'd like it to be perfect.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

And also I *really* don't want to be able to feel the ribs of stitching in the join of the leather. While having a feel of the leather Momo steering wheels at the local shop, I was horrified at how inconsistent the feel of the stitching was.

I have a momo race and it is awsome 350 I paid for it. Why dont you try and get a nardi wheel. They are round with no bulges at all so it might suit what your looking for. Generally in my experience momos have felt good when driving.

Yeah, Nardi, Moto Lita (if you can find them they have the best stitching i have ever had on an aftermarket leather wheel)etc are nice n round (not offset/odd shapes like most Momo wheels). I got an old Sparco deep dish on mine, Nice n round, but its not leather

hmm, seems as though Nardi and Moto-Lita specialise in wooden steering wheels primarily...although I don't mind this Nardi one;
but overall they all seem kinda ugly to me, this steering wheel will be going on a white '84 supra, so I kinda want to steer clear of rice, but not delve too far into the old-school.
I probably wasn't clear in explaining what I wanted with the leather grip side of things, of course I want perfect stitching, but I don't want to be able to feel it :/ I would have thought you could get seamless leather steering wheels...
Is it possible to get polyurethane wheels that do not have that sponge feel to them? like I don't want it to feel rock solid, but I also don't want to feel like I could bend it out of shape like the one I have at the moment..
thanks for the help

The Moto-Lita has absolutely no visible stitching. I used to stare at it while sitting at the lights wondering how the fek they did it. Moto-Lita makes all kinds of finishes, but yes, mostly old school style.

That comment was in reference to MOMO and my experience with them has been that the genuine MOMO wheels had quite good stitching, the fakes (which looked the same at first) had terrible lumpy stitching. Fake MOMO gear is apparently very common in Aus and is usually sold at full genuine price.
I had an air leather MOMO gear knob at one stage and even on a tiny item like that they manged to get the stitching very smooth.

i use a Sparco 330. as that would suggest, its 330 mm diameter, suede and round (as in, no bumps). $350, and nice grip while keepin a race theme to the car. I like it, a few of my friends love it, but best you go and look. other wise, the Nardi Classic line is popular and also very nice (i have used). up to you buddy, although keep in mind that only Momo are ADR approved, but overated, if u ask me.
oh and I think a few Issota's are approved too, but still....to much "look at me" status.

Just an update; Moto-Lita are happy to ship to Australia just as long as it's the same address as what's on your credit card, but supposedly the guy who knows about boss fittings is away until the 11th of July. I was informed that I could probably have a custom boss built for upward of 86 pounds, that's if the guy that is away thinks that no other bosses will fit my car.
so yeah, there's a list on the moto-lita website of which boss kits fit which car, but the ma61 supra isn't listed
does anyone know which other cars use the same boss kit as an MA61?

Now, i cant remember where, but im sure Ive seen a local shop stocking Moto-Lita. (mind you, my memory gets a little foggy the longer its been, so this could have been a few years ago) Surely you dont have to get it all the way from the UK?

but yeah, it would be nice if you could remember

Yeah, it would be the easiest way to go, only thing is you wont have the nice big horn button, it will be the little italian one, and as yet i havnt found an aftermarket momo/etc horn button that doesnt feel like your going to break it. But hey, its a small price to pay.

I got my nardi for $9.90 looks nearly new.
The only imperfection is that it has a very sligh bent spoke.
Which you an't see baerly at all.
How good it that.
Srew paying half a grand, at lest till you look on ebay.

ok, the moto-lita wheel kinda fell through, i've now been informed anything under 350mm is illegal, and as well the place that distributes moto-lita wheels isn't taking any more orders, i was offered a 350mm mark 4 in black (i wanted chromse spokes) for about $50 cheaper than rrp, but i didn't really want it.
i've been having a look on the japanese nardi site, and have found one that I really like, which is supposedly the same one the guy uses in that drift bible dvd.
yet I haven't found anywhere that can get nardi steering wheels...anyone know where I should be looking?
cheers

This is not true. Years ago when I first tried to insure my RA65, I was told over the phone that my just-under-14" momo wheel was illegal. I rang the RTA (Tas), they dug up the rules and told me that it was 12", or 12.5" or something like that.
