Gear oils - help! Thu, 30 June 2005 04:51 Go to next message
According to the owner's manual from the donor car, the transmision I'm using needs 75W90 API GL3 or GL4 lubricant. I've searched a few manafacturer's websites and cant find one to match, it seems 75W90 only comes in API GL5. What does the API GL# bit mean? Can I use GL5 where GL4 is specified? Valvoline makes a 75W85 API GL4, should I use this as an 'inbetween'?

I'm using ATF III at the moment, but it makes the transmission noisy. I searched but couldn't find any definitive info - help me, I'm desperate!

Cheers,
Andy

API GL3 and GL4 have been superceded API GL5 is the current standard.
Use 75W/90 API GL5 in it.

API GL5 is more stringent than GL4 and therefore your average GL5 oil would be of higher quality than the GL4 equivalent.

The GL stands for Gear Lubricant.
