engine conversion question

Now i went and had a look at this 89 cs corolla the other day and it had a 1.4L carby engine in it. Little more research uncovered its a 3afc which i had never heard of before so just wanted to know if they are part of the 4a interchangable family as i would like to put a 4age(smallport) in it but dont think it would be a straight swap. Does anyone know if it is or not????
Thanks, Nick.

I put it up in the first post it was an 89 model cs corolla hatchback. I went to 4age.net and in the tech section for ae82+ engine specs its said the cs comes with 2 engines the more common 4afc and a 3afc which im guessing is a cost saving option if you didn't want the 4afc. just not sure if its part of the 4a family.

well if you got all the mounts and crossmembers from a Twincam AE82 it should all bolt right up. If not I doubt the fabrication would be that difficult, given the ae82 came with the 4a-ge anyway.

I know what the motor is and I don't think it is part of the 4A family. You can usually tell this because of the code used...so basically anything with 4A in the engine name is part of the same family...like the 4AFC.
That doesn't mean you cannot put a 4A-GE in your car. Even though you have an engine that is not apart of the 4A family, the model of car you have is the same chassis shape as the corolla's with the 4A engine in it. It is apart of the AE-92 chassis.
So therefore you should be able to do a straight swap with not too much hassle, although don't quote me on that
To know how much work it will be and whether it's possible, head down to a mechanic and get them to look over it...and make sure you get more than one opinion.
