I am going to balance my rods and pistons myself, unless I am missing something it seems like a job I can do at home using some 0.1g resolution scales.

I'm getting mine done at Terry King's. His number's 9681 3462. He does all the balancing/machining as well.

there is plenty of places that shotpeen, just make sure they dont farm the work out or it will cost more.
samQ yes your mising something!like a balancing machine.sure you can take metal off to get all the same weight but the weight you take off will not be in the right place for a rotating assembly.be like putting weights onto a wheel were ever you felt like it,wouldnt balance it would it.confucius say"to balance something that turns, you must first spin to find were it is unbalanced"lol it wasnt confucius, it is really my saying but sounded better.

oh I don't know Mick, keeping in mind I am going to balance either end of the con-rod seperately and shave anything off both sides evenly. I bet that's what most shops do when they put it on their 'balancing machine'. I know what you mean but I don't think its that critical, I could br wrong though.

kingmick -> the conrods don't rotate though, they reciprocate, which is a different matter. If you balance them incorrectly I guess it'd be possible that at certain rpm you could get bad harmonics/resonance and the rod will be weaker at that frequency of vibration, but I dunno how badly you can stuff it up.

Steve Hooker out at Silverdale is the man to see for shot peening/crack testing, etc. He does a lot of work for shops in Western Sydney. Might be a bit far from the Central Coast though!
You should be able to Google his name and come up with his website. There is another guy I have used out at Orange for resizing and balancing/peening who is well known ,but his name escapes me at the moment. Anyone???

Both those guys are involved in the motorsport and high performance street scene(shouldn't matter anyway- if they are technically competent). Steve runs a formula libre hillclimb car from memory and used to race sidecars and a drag bike.
The other guy(sorry, still stuffed if I can remember the name) has been around for donkey's years- someone on here can surely name him.
Steve's company is" M T & C" I think, the site should have all the info you require.

Sorry, I'm largely unfamiliar with the drag guys, I know of an engineering business in Castle Hill that makes rods but unsure if he has drag affiliations.
The guy I was thinking of in Orange is Kim Baker,he does the balancing, honing and resizing but apparently NOT(as I thought) the shot peening. Not sure who he uses but I'm sure he would happily provide a contact.
As to who is the better of the two, I couldn't say, I've used them both, Steve mainly for crack testing various components and shot-peening rods I've prepped myself.Kim did an excellent job resizing and honing superbike rods which were real pigs because of an unusual cap design. Best bet ring them and go with the cheapest quote.
