Bees in a can Hilux Fri, 01 July 2005 03:34 Go to next message
recently bought a 91 hilux.... runs perfectly fine, until the speed gets over 80...once i get over 80,the engine begins to sound under stress....but up to 90 it isn't too bad...but after 90,it strains really realy bad, sounds like an airplane..

i don't think this is normal...it sounds like a car in 3rd gear going at 100...

It's a "bees in a can" type noise, and is very annoying

It's not very noisy or anything for normal under 80km/hr driving... you woudln't guess that it goes alot louder after..

It's a 4 speed manual btw, with a 1.8 unleaded engine

Another thing i've noticed, is that when you turn the key to "off" the engine stutters for a bit longer, and then stops.

ie, it doesn't immediately stop...

Bees in a can? you sure there isnt something loose rattling around? In my old S13 the splash guards underneath were a little loose, and didnt move until i hit about 90-100, then they used to make a rapid buzzing sound. Fixed the prob by pulling em off Very Happy .

The run on at the end (keeps running) can be that you have some carbon built up inside the cylinder, causing "pre-ignition" or run on.

PS, is it Petty or Deisel??

petrol

i'm guessing fuel injector cleaner to get rid of the carbon?

hmm, well the sound isn't a very soft buzzing one, and is quiet loud and prominent, so definatly not the mudflaps!

but maybe something bigger, but can't think of anything it could be..

Nah, not the mud flaps, the sheilding under the engine. Or it could be anything in the engine bay that vibrates once the revs get high enough. Next time it vibrates, see what revs its doing, then try to do the same revs in a different gear, or even while parked, and see what happens.

Also, Injector cleaner will only clean injectors. See your mechanic and he will put som de-carbonising stuff into each cylinder.

oh rite my bad Razz

well the problem being the ute doesn't have a tacho, so no idea how many revs it's doing..but when i do race the engine, to that many revs, it doesn't make that noise...

it's a 4 speed, and it definatly won't do 100 in 3rd gear, so i don't think thats an option this time Razz

Down a big hill in neutral will determine if its engine related or not...

About the run on, check your spark plugs are the right temperature rating.

I have a '90 4Runner, I'm of the opinion from what I've heard with trucks and 4Runners... and from my own experience that the speedo cables are prone to fail.

I've got a '76 Corona MkII with approx 500,000 kms and I've never had to think about the speedo cable. I've already replace the speedo cable on my 4Runner with a brand new OEM one once and had to service it again a few years later. When they start howling, buzzing, squealing it can be the most disconcerting noise because you're more less stunned and in disbelief that an otherwise healthy vehicle could make such a noise. Anyway, you mention that it doesn't seem to correlate with revs so to me that sounds like it isn't related to loose exhaust or mounts. Sounds more like a speed dependant thing like the mud flags example. But since it's a truck... I'm thinking speedo cable.

It's a pain to disconnect and lube, but you might get lucky trying to service it. If it's too far gone, you'd probably have to replace. Years ago I paid $90 cdn for a new Toyota cable and replaced it myself so it wasn't too hard to cope...

Good luck

that's a gd idea! Though, i should have mentioned before...

When the ute is doing 100-110, it makes the huge noise... stick the clutch in, and the noise goes away...

must be engine related rite?

Hmm, Plugs are the ones that are recommended, NGk's... One thing i noticed, is that you put the plugs in... and if you take them out say, 1000 km's later, they will be black.. Not in a bad sort of way at all...

alot like that, except the ceramic and stuff will be normal, and none of the oily liquid stuff that u can see in that pic... and not as built up, but i don't think it should be looking like this after such little driving?
