hey
ive got a couple of questions about my mk3.
firstly, at the top of the a-pillars on both sides where the pillar meets the roof, there are these little tweeter-like looking things. i have no idea what they are. my mate reckons they are microphones for a car phone but i dont have a phone in there.
also i thought they could be sensors for a car alarm or something. there is an alarm in the engine bay, but i dont know how to activate it, there is a key hole for it but i dont have a key, any suggestions how to get it working.
also what head decks are you guys running. my double din cassette radio thing is stuffed and im getting a head unit for my b'day. i was looking at a jvc one with remote and mp3 playback.
while im here. on my left rear view mirror the fibreglass surround where it connects the mirror to the body a large chunk is missing. do i need a new mirror or just the fibreglass bit. cause the RHS mirror has already been replaced and it costed the dealer 160 he reckons. dont really want to fork out that for a mirror.
sorry bout long post.
thanks

Im not a MKIII owner but i'll give it a shot anyways
1) They more than liely probably would be alarm sensors
2) You would probably need a remote to arm/disarm the alarm, in most cases the keyhole on the siren is to turn the noisy bugger off if it goes crazy on ya or if your working on it connecting & disconnecting the battery.
3) As I said I do not own a MKIII but I do have an MZ20 Soarer, pretty well much the same as a supra, and I have installed just a single din head unit and left the graphic equalizer under, but you can go to a wreckers or Toyota and get one of those pockets that can fill up the remaining space.
Hope that helps!

ok, here is my installer's analysis:
1/ They are ultrasonic sensors. Ultrasonic sensors are shit. They are a bitch to tune properly and are as reliable as a jaguar motor. Don't use them
2/ As above, yes you will need the original remotes most likely. Turning the key will simply enable the siren on the alarm. Best bet is to get it removed and replaced with a DECENT alarm, and if you want internal protection, then get microwave sensors - they are a million times better.
3/ Can use either double or single DIN head units. If you use single DIN, then yes a basic single DIN pocket can be purchased from toyota for bugger all $$$ to fill in the gap. Remember with MP3 head units or any MP3 sound reproduction, there is a loss in quality (but a bonus in data size!).
JVC is ok for mid range head units, but useless if you really want something of choice. Depending on your budget there is a lot to chose from.
4/ if you can fibreglass, no worries! if not.. then maybe a replacement is the go.

k thanks for the replys
ill probably just get a new alarm put in cause chances are that one is prob 15yrs old as well. any suggestions on what brand or what type would be most suitable. i am willing to spend a bit on an alarm if it helps restisure safety of the car. do any of them detect pressure or what ever so that if someone leans on it with a key it will go off?
at the moment i am gettin the jvc mp3 one. i plan to get a good double din one in a couple of years so i dont want to spend much on this one. does the quality go down when you play normal cd's as well or just burnt mp3's.
thanks

If you're after a cheap-fix, you can have my cobra remote-central that you can scavenge for parts or whatever.. it came with my supra, not sure if OEM, but probably about 10y.o... it has ultrasonic sensors too, plus 2 remotes, and key that fits on alarm siren in engine bay $45 the lot... email techiemark@optushome.com.au (no solenoids though, as I still need to open my doors)

dude... easier and far better to get a brand spankers new one! Increases in alarm technology over the past 10 years have been big! especially in terms of reliability!
Go to any top notch car audio/car security shop and ask to see the range, and ask about what is "insurance approved". Also ask you insurer if there is an alarm/immobiliser that you can istall to reduce your premium. If there is none, features to look for are:
- all black wiring
- min 2 point on board immobilisation relays (more is better!)
- central locking control
- automatic immobilisation
- dual stage shock sensor
- ability to add on extras (like microwave sensors, auto window winders, boot release etc)
- rolling code (is a MUST)
- anything else is good

I have never seen anything like that (US MK3's). For the head unit, I have a half pocket and then a single DIN CD (Eclipse). Right now, I am mounting my Apex-i AFC in the top pockect above the CD player. I prefer the single DIN because of the extra space you get. I've seen turbo timers as well as boost controllers mounted in the extra space.
You may want to check out www.supraforums.com and look into the MK3 section for more info. Right now we have about 550 mk3 owners in that section.
If you're looking for any US parts, I should be able you hook you up.
