SX gearbox to GZE Sat, 02 July 2005 02:39 Go to next message
I finally bought a Corolla SX!! I've been looking for 2 years straight for a good standard model...I discovered they are rare in Victoria Smile

Anyway, for the moment it's gone straight to the panel shop for a full respray. It's a red car with badly faded paint, so I was hoping to respray it black, but the guys said that would cost me heaps more and be a lot of work. So we settled on a nicer 2-pak red and the best thing is it will only cost me $1000. But the catch is I have to prepare it in his workshop.

Annnnyyyyywwwaaay.......while that is all happening, I'm thinking about the engine conversion I'll be doing (4A-GZE turbo-charged). I'm trying to do it on a budget, so I'm thinking whether I need a half-cut or not? I think that I could do without the standard computer (using EMS hopefully) and gearbox. Basically I want to know from people's experience whether the standard corolla sx gearbox can be mated to the GZE engine, and whether it can handle the extra power?

Thanks for any advice.

if its an sx a frontcut you will get bigger brakes. if your going to turbo just get a gze motor and box and use your wiring harness.then hunt for gze front brakes, as you will need them.

If you are considering engineering, add atleast another $700 to your expense list, and possibly another $700 for an EPA test.

I'm going thru engineering with my AE92 4AGZE conversion at the moment and the only thing holding me up is emissions information about the MAP sensor GZE... so I'll prolly have to do the $700 test aswell...

Just something to think about.

forget using the standard sx box, it wont handle the extra torque of the supercharged gze let alont a turbo'd gze.
I had a mate go through 2 sx boxes before changing to the gze box and now he is happy...
Also, buy a front cut, it will come with EVERYTHING necessary to do the conversion. My other mate bought just a motor and spent weeks trying to find things that were missing from the motor package. A front cut almost guarantees nothing has been touched since the Factory...
I have had a GZE for over a year and have had no problems with it as i got a front cut. I am now going turbo.... Very Happy

Hmmmm....thanks for the advice. I just feel that a half-cut will have a lot of unneccessary parts that will just end up being thrown out. I could do with the brakes and gearbox, maybe driveshafts, but what else would I need?

The half cut comes with the quarter panels as well doesn't it? How much will a half cut cost me?

There's a fair bit of crap from the halfcut you can re-use... the main benefit it you can see the engine running, there is nothing missing (hopefully, check it etc) and it's a bloody good reference.

I have a Holden Nova, so I used everything from the cut except the dashpad, lights, panels...

I used the subframe, heatercore, aircon core, blowermotor, loom, everything, then put my AE92 Aus delivered Dash over the top and whacked in an SX cluster for good measure Wink
