3SFE timing belt not moving

Hey all,
Please bear with me, I dont know heaps about cars!
Went to drive my SV21 camry on Sat night and started fine, drove for a little bit then it turned off by itself. Wouldnt restart.
Next day I had a look at it and the starter motor is turning over, spinning the belts. When I opened up the cam cover and tried starting the engine, the timing belt wouldnt move!
I really want to try and fix the engine myself, I cant afford to spend heaps on it as I am a poor arsed student!
Does anyone know what the problem might be?! Any help is very greatly appreciated...

The belt wasnt moving, I am not sure if the gears were not moving - but I didnt notice any wierd sound (eg. grating of the gears over the belt) so I guess they werent as well.
Could the pistons have crashed into the valves?

well the gears would be right in front of you with the belt wrapped around them. if theyre not moving.. then somethings VERY wrong..
i.e. cam gears dont move means cams dont move, means valves wont move, means no air injection to the engine, means wont fire at all.. if none of thats moving then youre in deep shit.. you may have even cooked/seized ur engine up..

dude if your starter is ticking over fine but the belt isn't moving, I think you most likely just chopped off some teeth on your timing belt down at the crank pully - this is where the most force is applied to the belt anyway...

Could it be possible to test this theory via the distributor leads? If I removed one and checked if it sparked (or something along those lines), would that help diagnose the problem?!
Thanks again to all for helping..

or maybe your timing belt snapped, still around the cam gears, but if you remove the lower timing belt cover find that the belt is no longer one piece. Just see if you can grab that timing belt it rip it straight out of the engine. That's the quickest way to find out if it's snapped
Not to worry, your engine is most likely fine and you just need to install a new timing belt.

Or another possibility is the problem is with your starter motor. You could have ripped some teeth of the starter fly out gear, or the flywheel itself.
This would give you the sound of the starter but the engine obviously wouldnt crank. I feel it could be this as you havent described any strange rubbing or whining noises coming from under the cam cover.
I would try putting the car in 1st and rocking the car back and forth with the aim of moving the car in one direction. This will turn the motor a few degrees which mayline up some good teeth on the flywheel to your starter.
OR
Unbolt the starter altogether and expect the teeth on both the fly out gear and the flywheel (you can peer in the hole left by the starter and see the edge of the flywheel to see if the teeth are buggered)
OR
Just try clutch starting the car (if manual) you will know straight away if your motor is seized or not.
