Replacing wheel stud on rear drums? Mon, 09 December 2002 02:27 Go to next message
One of my wheel studs got broken when i had an alignment done. I have a replacement, but anyone have any tips on how to do it? If you take the drum off, there's not enough room behind the hub to thread the stud in from Sad thanks

Off with the hub then I guess...

How the hell did someone, er, 'break' a stud doing an alignment? Just curious...

It happens when the suspension shop uses a rattle gun to do up the wheel nuts, and torques them to buggery. Happened to a friend of mine recently, he had to replace all of his wheel studs as a result. Whenever I take my car to a shop that needs to take the wheels off, I make it very clear that they're not to touch my wheel nuts with a rattle gun!

Yeah. I do tend to overtorque them by hand, but I have never had toruble before. I thought it was my fault 'cos i never bothered to grease the studs. Only cost $3 or so from repco for a new one, and the shop did a good alignemnt, but ever so...

I'd be pretty pissed at a shop if they broke EVERY stud!!!!!!!!!!

Ah, how do you remove the hub on a drum brake? I've never done it before, Hayes manual doesn't mention it. If it was discs, I think i would be able to do it, but have no idea with the drum rear.

Just take the drum off and you will notice a hole in the backing plate behind the hub, Line the busted stud up with the hole and give it a wack with a hammer. The studs are just a press fit.

The new stud needs to be slotted in the back then put the nut supplied with the stud on and tighten it up, it should pull through the hub and seat itself.

Make sure you grease the thread before you put the wheel on, because the new studs come without grease and the same thing will happen if you leave it dry.

By the sounds of things, it is probably worthwile putting some grease on all the other studs.

Have fun
