SE-86 big brakes finally finished Wed, 06 July 2005 07:39 Go to next message
I'm being cheeky and have decided to call it an SE-86 from now on. Smile

The big brakes are on, yet to be bled and driven.

The difference between the standard AE-86 disc and the big one.

Test fit on the strut.

16" wheel, still plenty of room left.

No backing plate, so I have to keep some temps in the brakes in puddles.

Toyota RAV4 discs, 300m diameter 19mm thick & ventilated, Wilwood Dynalite four-spot cailpers, milled backing plate from a large chunk of alloy.

Fingers crossed it'll work well.

looks like you have a nice moment arm there!

how much of the inner part of the disc is not being used? (not that you need massive pads on a light car with large discs anyway Wink )

nice work Smile

You can't see the inside of the disc there, but the inner section of the pad is right on the edge. So's the outer edge, so it's almost as if the pads & calipers were made for those discs. Pretty handy!

FWIW here's the mounting bracket, milled from a large chunk of alloy.

Looks tidy.
I ummed and arred about those rotors for another (similarly light) application. Were you able to get undrilled blanks?

Nope, unfortunately not.

Just got back from its first drive.
Not very good to start with, but the fronts are starting to wake up.
I only gave it a half-arsed bleed to get some pedal so I'm not really surprised it's not the best. But as the pads settle it's getting better.
Initally I could only lock the rears, so I would on more front brake because I didn't really know where the balance bar was set anyway.
It's now fully at the front and I can lock the fronts with a bit of effort.
I think once the pads are finally settled and all the air is out of the system I can wind off a heap of front balance bar, and it'll have a really nice pedal and pull up well.
Anyway, the discs are nice & shiny now. Smile
