Welding etc

Guys,
A query about welding: I want to fabricate material like thin aluminium or steel (2mm or 3mm plate) into items such as catch cans, intercooler components, exhausts bits etc.
Can you perform this kind of work with an oxy welding kit? I have a MIG which is great for thickish plate, but when used on Aluminium melts straight through, even on lowest current settings.
What do you guys use for such work?
Thanks
Dan

I recomend a TIG for welding thin material. i work in a sheetmetal work shop and i know that is the way to go. Ive never tryed useing an oxy for Aluminium! but i do know that an oxy weld has a lower temp tolarance. a mig is only good for tacking of thin aluminium but not to good for long welds as it just melts the metal.

Yep, I figure TIG is the way to go. But if I can get away with an oxy which also lets me do heaps of other stuff, I'd rather get the oxy.
Has anyone tried using an oxy on thin sections?

For welding thin alum with oxy I think you can use LPG instead of acetilne(sp), as it burns cooler, and something about putting soap on the area you are going to weld, something to do with the oxide coating on the alum.
Use A TIG!!

Yeah, I'll use a TIG when someone buys me one ... whats the point of doing your own welding in the first place?? ":)
