Setting up 2tg carbs, the basics? Sat, 09 July 2005 09:00 Go to next message
Hey,
Im in need with a bit of assistance with a set of mikuni 40mm carbs off a 2tg. The engine they are on, complete with 2tg intake manifold, is a 3tc.

Im pretty new to carbs so I dont have much of an idea, but I was wondering if anyone had any vacuum diagrams or any good pictures of how everything hooks up. I have pretty much guessed how everything would go from a logical point of view but I dont know how much if it is right.

Any information on tuning and what all the various screws do would be great also.
So far I havent even got the thing started, but I only really tried for about 10 minutes after putting them on.

Thanks,
Tim.

Hey man, glad to hear someone is still playing with carbs.

No 1, If you have the correct manifold, with the ports connecting No 1+2 cylinders, to No 3+4 cylinders, then you are in good shape.

3 air lines, dizzy vacuum, charcoal cannister, and crankcase PCV valve.

Adjusting screws, 1 at the base of each stack, closest to manifold, these are mixture screws. Set the mixture on each by gently turning the screw clockwise, until it just bottoms out.(not too tight, or you will stuff the taper on the screw) Next step, is to unscrew that screw by 2.5 turns. Do that for all 4 screws, and your idle mixture is pretty well set.

Main fixed jets within the carby, will look after all, but idle.

To set throttle butterfly position, there are 2 screws located on the linkage that joins both carbs. One will adjust idle RPM on both carbs, the other sets the balance between the 2 carbs, have a close look, and a twirl with a screwdriver, and all will become obvious.

Then, it is time to start the engine.

Back off the idle stop screw ,and adjust the balance screw, so that both carbs are flowing around about the same, this will take a good ear, then adjust final idle rpm with the idle stop screw, a bit of stuffing around and experimenting, but will be worth it when you have a nice smooth idle.

cheers Chuck.

Yeah that sounds about right. Ill give it another go tomorrow with a bit more effort.

What are the 2 bigger holes in the manifold for, between the two points for 1 +2 and 3+4 respectively.

I figured the idle and mixture screws. I guess the first step is to get it sorted.

The manifold had no vacuum fittings so I just put them from the 3tc manifold on for the brake booster and a 3 way fitting for 3 vacuum lines.

What are the 2 vacuum looking lines on the carbs like, 1 on each carb?

I figured where the jets are too, does anywhere know where to get jet for mikuni's as no doubt we will need to make some changes there too.

Thanks for the help.
Ill keep playing around tomorrow.

I got the car started today. After a bit of playing around I got it idling and starting pretty well. Starts almost immediately without any throttle now which I guess is good.

Took a bit of fiddling but eventually I got the idle sorted. To start with it was up at about 2500rpm, got it down to about 1050rpm which isnt much more than the old stock carb.

Sounds good anyway.

The whole adventure wasnt too bad except for slightly out ignition timing to start with and a few flames Confused
