i have read on these forums that a hilux diff is a good upgrade for an ae86 but none of these entries ever said what model hilux, if they are a straight fit or need to be modified, if they come with lsd if not where to get them and how much a conversion would cost? Would it be more cost effective to put a kaaz lsd in my t series diff. thanks

It's been mentioned before... do a bit of searching.
You want old school Hilux (e.g. RN27) to get the right width, and you'll need to mod the mounts, tailshaft, etc. You can get plenty of different ratios to go in them, factory and aftermarket LSDs/lockers.

from what u are saying it sounds like u already have a t series housing. If this is the case u only have 1 real option, get a kaaz, cusco or trd centre for it and live happily ever after.
As for the hilux diff, it would be unbreakable in a sprinter. But u cant make a hilux centre (F and G series?) go in a t-series home...
You would have to buy the whole diff and mod it as above, then if u want a nice lsd for it, ull be up for more $ again, however factory LSD's are common, but no where near as good as a trd, kaaz or cusco diff.

All depends on what you're trying to pass through it really, and if the T gears/axles are really up to it...

thanks heaps for the advice.. yeah i do have the T series diff and running a basicaly stock 16v (exhaust, air filter) so by the sounds of it $ 1100 for a kaaz would be the cheapest way to go

The Hilux diff is quite literally a truck diff - which means it's big and heavy and saps quite a lot of power. It's insane overkill for a NA 1.6 litre engine, but you definitely wouldn't break it!
As above, keep your T series.
