Okay, I have a few questions.
Girlfriend is now looking at excels
Not astras, not Barinas.
What is the damn difference between them? I mean as in Excel 'Sprint' and that. Which ones are twin cam and have multi point injection? Thats all I really wanna know. I hope noone here can help 'cause anyone who owns an Excel should be shot and we're all Toyota fans here

Trying desperately man. She doesn't wanna spend much and thinks $5000 for a Hyundai is good 'cause they have low kms and are basically as new cars (only 4 yrs old in good nic). What she doesn't realise is they are cheap for an obvious reason (as are Barinas for that matter!). THEY SUCK!

If you really want to stuff the budget and spend a bit more, wait for the new Corolla Coupe... 2ZZ-GE and 140kW...

DO NOT LET HER BUY AN EXCEL AT ALL COSTS!!!
My missus bought one brand new four and a bit years ago and it was without doubt THE worst decision she ever made.
At approx 20,000kms (that's not a mistake - TWENTY THOU on a new engine, NOT 200,000) the engine had no be rebuilt as the gudgeon pin had worn the piston oval!!!
At approx 36,000kms the gearbox had to be rebuilt as second, third and fourth syncros's were shot
During the rest of the time we owned it we replaced the AC compressor, PS pump, alternator, both elec fans, water pump, broken clip holding the driveshaft into the gearbox (again at 20,000kms - oil everywhere) and probably other things I've forgotten. Try as we might we could never get a decent wheel allignment setup on the car and the bastard rattled like a babies toy from the moment we picked it up. When we got rid of the car it only had a measly 100,000kms on it.
The car has now been passed on to my wifes sister and she put it in for a major service and they came back to her and said there's some problem with the cams (I didn't listen intently coz that car shits me to tears ).
I rate ALL of the excels and their renamed replacements (Accent and whatever they are calling it now) as being at least equal to the legendary Lemon's the Leyland P38 and the Chrysler Centura. For Christ sake buy a Corolla but not a friggen Excel.........make that excel as it doesn't deserve a capital letter

It's funny how you get good and bad stories but my mate bought one new, he has done 180,000 klm's and all I've had to do to it is change the leads appart from the general service items. It's been the best car he has ever owned.

richard they are cheap cause there is so many of them!!! and they werent that dear to start with
dont buy the old astras as they have the old camira engines in them and they are just rubbish
if i were her i would buy a corolla, having owned one they are alot more refined than the excel and much better to drive

it really depends how you drive it.
I used to had one. It's not bad. Not that unreliable.
Excel-
1995 was the first release of the new shape.
Excel Sprint is single cam.
And you will normally see the model, gs, ls, gls etc.
G--twin cam
L--four doors.
I think it's not bad for a lady driver.

hyundais cant be too bad cause all the Phat ricers out there have em - they looko SO cool pulling wheelies and smokin HSV's !!
anyway enough of that - Hyundai on most part arent too bad a car if you want somethign cheap to buy - and no performance
treated right they should last but they are renouned for having crappy gearboxes and motors - and will break easily
If she intends to drive to uni or work and back - then fine but id be putting my 5000 dollars on a KE bubbleback laser or a corolla
both cars are 10 times more reliable than an excel and just as cheap - if not cheaper to run

Excels are the Dispossable Nappy of the Motorvehicle industry.
They rattle and shake from factory, the build quality and performance varies vastly from car to car and in my opinion they look terrible too (no matter how much you spend on ricing them up)
for $5000 you could easily buy yourself an AE92 corolla which will go better, look better, last longer and has a bit more street cred.
I take pride in the cars I own (thus only ever owing Toyotas) and so would never even thing about buying one of these SH!TT3R5
Make sure you get your G/F to drive a few different similar sized cars so that she knows the difference in build quality (or lack thereof)

You've never owned a hyundai but you know all about their shit quality. I own a Hyundai Elantra as a daily driver and the quality is better than an australian made toyota. An excel will kill an AE92 rolla any day(not SX). I'm not bagging Toyota cause I love em and thats why I have a Sprinter and I've had many other toyota's but when it come's to value for money Hyundai is not bad.

personally ive heard good and bad stories about excels and hyundais in general, ive also driven hyundais and daiwoos, sometimes you get good ones and sometimes bad, which would put me right off buying one just in case it was a real lemon.
now toyotas have a great history of reliability, for $5000 you could get a corolla or a camry (dont knock em) both of which probably have better interior room and styling, also theyre not as common (looking individual is important to chicks)

I agree that quality varies from car to car in Hyundais. I'd rather she didn't get one in case that patrticular one is crap. A few of my mates have them, one 4-door which rattles, misfires and ain't too good generally, another 2-door (which I only rode in last night for the first time) has a cold air intake and ricey neons and you know what, it had the shit in the higher revs. I was surpised. Both were 1997 SOHC, 1.5L enignes.
Talking about cars in the lunchroom at work a couple of days ago I heard a story from my boss that he knows a woman who bought a brand spanking new Elantra last year, $19990 or something (fully optioned), had to go overseas for work, HAD to sell the car quick, she got a lousy $8000 just SEVEN weeks later!!!!!!!!
They are cheap, no good for resale and I still maintain my bias for Hyundai, along with Daewoo, Kia, Daihatsu and Mistubishi (except imports for the three diamonds ) on the grounds that they are just SHIT!
But I have no say in what she gets, 'cause to her, I'm Mr. Know-it-all Toyota biased man who can't like anything else (what crap, if I could I'd get a Skyline GTR, 300ZX, WRX STi or Focus RS )
