KE55 keeps stalling when hot/thrashed.. Tue, 12 July 2005 02:46 Go to next message
Hey,

Took the Corolla out for a drive yesterday and had some "problems".. Thankfully I was only doing a lap around the block!

The car had been warming up for about 10-15 minutes, just idling away. Doesn't have any probs starting, usually take about 2 turns before it kicks in.

I'd driven out the driveway, turned onto the road and headed off. Hit the first corner and gave it a rev whilst dropping down a gear.. Had the thing accelerate a little bit then started to die. Pressing the accelerator didn't help at all, it just kept dying. Put it in neutral and the engine stopped completely, the car rolled to a stop.

Got out and pulled the lid off the carby, which resulted in a bit of black smoke coming out. I'm thinking this is the biggest indicator of whatever the problem is, as I've had it do this before, with the same problem/symptons, except last time it started after letting it sit for about a minute (with the top off the air cleaner).

After taking the top off the air cleaner, it tried to crank several times, with it nearly starting a couple.. I stopped, fearing the battery would die as well. So I grabbed the pliers and pulled the line off the filter, filling a jar with some fuel.. Poored it down the carby and it started again, then stalled.... Did the same again, this time it ran fine.

Drove up the road a bit, came to another corner and tried to give it to it again, only to have it die on me again about 500m up the road. Rinse, repeat (more fuel down carby) and the cars going again..

So, any ideas?? I'm wondering if maybe it's the fuel pump or filter, possibly restricting the amount of fuel getting to the carby.. Or, it could be a really bad valve, letting exhaust back through the carby (smoke), stopping the good air from mixing with the fuel. I don't know if that's possible though.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

prolly some crud blocking the jets in the carby.
we had this problem also.
after some wetlap drift action to stir up crud in the fuel tank
carby got blocked and was GAY.

we also had a problem with float level when cornering hard in the dry - due to the fuel getting thrown to one side inside the carby..
but this does not sound like your problem.

also had a problem with the fuel pump not pumping enough fuel..
ran fine.. take off flooring in in 1st, 2nd, and a bit into 3rd..
then just no fuel and car pretty much died for a while.

so.. start by checking float level when your car goes crap.. make sure there is fuel in there.

then replace (or add) inline fuel filter to the carby (ooh $2 from supercheap)
and try and clean carby jets.

pull out the needles n stuff.. (I dont REALLY know carbies)

but hope this helps Smiley =

blocked jets..
did you use silicon sealant on the carby gasket?

Didn't touch the carby... But I recently put Mobil 8000 in it, which could have cleaned out a lot of crap from the tank/put it in the carby. Laughing

Would explain why it wasn't doing it last month.

Is there a "quick-fix" for cleaning the jets, or would that require a rebuild? Can I just spray some carby clean down it? Rolling Eyes

I initially thought it was flooded after trying to start it a couple of times, so I removed the drain bolt, but no petrol came out. This was what also led me down the path of blocked fuel filter.. But the float idea sounds interesting.

I managed to stall my last Corolla by slamming it sideways round a corner right outside a cop shop in the wet.... That was fun. I'd assume that's similar to what you described.
