Did the mechanic know it was LSD?

Just drain the oil and fill with LSD oil.

If its only been a short while no damage should have been done.

Mechanic says he did not realise it was LSD (the build plate from the half cut has the LSD code). It has been 4 months and 12000km. Would it be like closing the gate after the horse has bolted to do it now?

By changing to LSD oil you will hopefully prevent any further damage.
Doesn't mean you haven't done any yet though.

I'm not a diff expert, so I can't really say.

I don't think using non-LSD oil causes any damage, it just lacks the friction modifiers which help the clutch packs do their job. In other words, your LSD hasn't been working as well as it should with the wrong oil in it. Put in the correct oil and all will be well again.

Depends what sort of LSD it is... a Torsen LSD won't mind, a clutch type LSD will slip and chatter.

Most Torsens should be fed API GL-5 75W/90
Most clutch type LSD's should be fed an API GL-5 LS90
Most gearbox's and slip diffs can be fed API GL-5 75W/90 too which is a bonus for those with a torsen LSD or 3.

Hmm, An AE92 with 3 Torsens? Bring it on.
No, mine's a factory one from my Silvertop Halfcut.
