It was the editors car of Zoom I believe. I remember it being mentioned in an article about joining car clubs (for things such as dyno day / track sessions).

smt_007 wrote on Thu, 14 July 2005 01:19 | Also the 260z came with a 2600cc engine, so you should be able to engineer a 1j in it right?, is there a weight restriction law?
|
It's not quite that simple - the maximum engine size is different for forced induction engines. Having said that, I'm pretty sure a 2.5 litre turbo engine in a 260Z is legal under the current rules. Have a look at the RTA web site, the rules are listed there somewhere.

in nsw you can put up 2 a 5.4 litre forced induction motor into a 260z. but be careful as the chassis at the front bends very quickly without support.

I see your in newcastle, my mate craig at Nova Auto Innovations in newcastle, said he has already put a rb26 in a 260z, so it shouldnt be too much hassle with the 1j, of course you need custom fabrication and there will always be some problems that will need to be sorted like any conversion.

I think my ears are burning..
I am the new owner of the car, in the UK.
Funnily enough I've just managed to get the paint code off Ben Ellis the previous owner (and zoom editor). It is actually a toyota colour 'TAU 3N9', I think tau might stand for toyota australia?
There are some scans of the original article at www.blkmgk.com, click pics and then 1jz in 240z. It isn't my site, so I thanks the owner and hope he doesn't mind me sending people over!
any questions just let us know..
(It is actually a 240z btw)

Hey, good to see your on toymods , yeah i know its a 240z, problem is they are extremely rare in aus, there are a few 260's but they are in bad condition.
Did you get any chassis bend as a previous poster has said?, or is it braced?.
You yanks love your 7ms , check out 7mpower.com if you havnt already for some crazy 7mgtes.
Nice to see some International users from the US and UK, welcome.

yeah, we push the 7, but like everyone else, we appreciate extrodinary fast accelerating street cars.... even better when you can get the job done with a dirt cheap powerplant.
Done/seen a few swaps. In a right hand drive, I go the RB. In the left hand drive, the 7 or jz (hot side away from sterring/brakes).
With equal effort/mods, they all perform the same

Good choice of cars! Never seen a turbo FTO before, or Integra turbo either. Heard of them but not in Newcastle. Should go hard!

Sorry, get it now, didn't read your post properly in that you are looking into a 260z 1jz conversion.
I haven't yet had any problems with chassis bend, but I do intend on getting some strut braces made up, unfortunately standard ones won't fit due to the turbo inlet piping.
the only things I really needed to get done was to replace the haltech boost solenoid (I've since worked out that they corrode and stick a bit over here) and replaced broken driveshafts, although the skyline ones were meant to be pretty strong..oh and get the cracked intercooler welded up
I've also done a bit of dyno tuning @14psi to get the following at the hubs:

I still really like the colour but pretty difficult to get a match!
I've done quite a few track days, and my first ever drag run, so its getting plenty of use and I'm really enjoying it!

well, was a little disappointed with my first try - I had 2 runs, first with too much wheelspin, and trying to stay in 3rd, whilst bouncing off the rev limiter. 13.3 @109
2nd did slightly better off the line but messed up my gear changes a bit, same 13.4, both around 2.2/2.3 60fts
I know the car has done a 12.56, so trying to get close to that.
some more excuses were it was about 33 in the shade - in the UK!!! (so kept boost about 13psi)
I do have a question though, what would be a safe rev limit for the 1jz, I think it is now set at 7200, but a few extra revs, might let me stay in 3rd on the quater mile
