Turbos: diff btw CT20b and CT26? Thu, 14 July 2005 08:37 Go to next message
I recently bought an ST205 GT-Four, and to my knowledge, it should come with a CT20B, right...?

well, I'm not sure if the turbo I have is a CT20 or CT26, because some people have told me the ST205 comes with a CT26... so what's the difference between CT20 and CT26?

Also, any outward differences so I can spot it straight away? I can't see CT2x on the housing anywhere...

If it just says Toyota on the housing, it's a CT20B. CT26's have it written on it after the word Toyota.

Not sure of how much it differs to the CT26, but it's a wanted item. I could be talking out of my arse, but I thought the main difference is that it flows better up top (doesn't run out of puff as quickly as the CT26) and also spools up a little quicker.

I got an ST205 front-cut from Japan, and the turbo said Toyota, that's it. It was later found to be a CT20b when the turbo had to be rebuilt. The compressor wheel is ceramic and spins up straight off idle, very responsive. Because my turbo's seals were stuffed, I had mine rebuilt with the guts of a CT26 and the compressor wheel upped to a 56-trim (hi-flowed). Takes a little longer to get off the mark than the CT20b, but it's better mid-range and top end.

If I could have kept the standard turbo, I would have. Confused

did toyota actually call it a CT20B, after eading up a few things, toysport seems adamant that there is no CT20B except for the racing turbo from many years ago (2TGTE time), and that the later 3SGTE turbos are still CT26, just revised versions.. but not a CT20B... it's all semantics Wink

The ST205 only comes with a twin entry CT20B.

You are exactly right oldcorollas, there's no such thing as a CT20B. It was a term invented on the internet. But since everyone knows it as that it's far easy to keep using the term rather than saying a CT26 off a gen3 3SGTE Wink

The name CT20B came from Toyota. It is used in the Service manual and in the EPC.
I would also have to wonder why they would call it a CT26 when its a different size turbo.
I could understand calling it a CT26 if the housings were the same size but just using a ceramic turbine and better bushes.

i was under the impression it was named by toyota, it is quite different to ct26 which i suppose also has its own variants - single/twin entry, ceramic/steel, different compressor sizes.

Cool1: Where abouts does it make make mention of CT20B in the EPC. The most I can get out of it is the part number 17201-74070

Edit: Also, just checked the enging manual here http://www.celicatech.com/imagearchive/bgbonline/b gb.php and it says nothing of the sort either.

I need proof dammit Wink

The EPC gives the description of CT20B/something/something

I think one of the somethings describes the actuator location.

Just did a search of the EPC on a ST205 for CT26 - nothing, CT20B - nothing, CT20 - nothing, TURBO - went through every diagram and nonthing mentions CT20B or CT26, ACTUATOR - same thing.

*shrug* I don't really care, but it would be nice to put this ancient arguement to rest.

CT20 = steel
CT20A = ceramic
CT20B = ceramic

Note that all three are very different turbos, despite the similar name.

The export market ST-205 CT20b's were also steel wheeled.
