have to say it's the right move, otherwise the forum's going to be hit with hundreds of other free email address, geocities urls, ebay usernames and thousands of other craps which doesn't make sense, the number plates is worst enough! (but it's actually quite a smart move by RTA as people will spend money buying number plates from RTA hoping they can one day sell it for a good price, but we all know that never happens and RTA will get richer and richer! )

yeah i dont know what its like over in your state but here the number at least has to be registered to a car. it doesnt stop the problem but at least it makes it small. can only have as many personalised number plates equaling the number of cars you have

but isn't it the same thoughts as wishing someone would pay $10,000 for a $380 number plate?

a number plate is a bit different though...
it's an actual thing that you can see and touch and is personalised.
For example, if I was rather rich I'd pay a lot to get the number plate "GRANT" seeing as my name is Grant, and I'd be the only person in my state to have that number plate on my car.
A custom plate that fits a car, say for a high powered skyline, SKYWPN (skyline weapon) someone who has spent $???,??? to hot up their car might not be worried about spending upto $5000 on getting the exact number plate they want to totally complete the look of the car.
Just my thoughts anyway... I had troubles talking myself into getting slimline plates. With my new plates though.. "RYC" or rice are the first three letters, d'oh!

i agree with the selling of number plates! there is nothing wrong with getting number plates to suit your car, as it can continue a theme, title the car, advertise your name/business etc etc
Myself i own the plates "VY HSV".... now you can tell me im stupid, but im sure someone will want them for their top notch HSV!
I also own ORA-280 for my RA28.... just suits the car!
email addresses tho... thats just stupid. its not tangeable, and also nerdy

Not to mention the fact that the sale of the addresses contravenes the rights of use schedule, opening vendor and advertiser to litigation with the parent company.
Anyway it was available free - why allow shitbags to shamelessly profiteer from a free service?

don't get me wrong about number plates, even though I don't have a custom one, but I'll want one in the future, but what I was saying is, those that buys number plates without meaning and trying to sell it right away at top dollars are just not right.. but buying a number plate you like is different, and buying a number plate that you like, then having someone offer you top $$$ because they too like your number plate is different (really lucky too!), BUT buying a number plate which you thought is worth thousands and trying to sell it for a million is, well, nothing wrong, but pretty embrassing! Sort of, if you know what I mean..
But have anyone typed up a domain name in their browsers and came up with those bloody annoying "Domain Real Estate" pages? Imagine also someone had bought your favourite number plate, not because they like it or use it, but comes around and ask if you want to buy it off them for $5000? What pisses you more is, they tell you the number plate "HAS NEVER BEEN USED BEFORE!!!", wow! Aren't you happy?? (With $5000 you can probably get the RTA to remake your number plate in new paint and metal probably more than a 100 times too!)

I think the whole never been used issue is actual an originality thing.
People who spend $5000 on number plates don't wont their car being associated with the previous car the plates where on.
On a side note.... I had a friend that used to buy plates from the RTA like KINGGEM and stuff like that (not a good friend more an acquaintance) and ask $5000.... most of the time he'd only end up getting around $500 for them though.
I think they all ask ridiculous prices but very rarely get them. Except those number only ones that only have 2-3 digits.... they go for a fortune.

the numeric number plate are completely different, because they are vintage, and they are expensive, they mostly can only be bought from auctions, and only rich people will buy them, it cost heaps to transfer the plates, and because everyone knows it's pretty waste of money, it's a sign showing how rich they actually are, it's a way of showing off really, if you know what I mean!
