Bought my first Toyota

Hey Guys,
Just bought my first Toyota.
I bought a 91 Toyota Cressida glx.
Yep i know it's got a 7M-GE.
What should i be looking out for on these cars?
What is the chassis code for it?
There is some noise in the head like a knocking sound. Don't think its a bearing. Got a mechanic out to come and see it. He said the head gasket is fine (Common Thing?). Its got 175,000 Km. You can feel the knocking through the inlet manifold.
Has anyone experienced the same thing?
He put the engine under load and the knocking noise goes...
Otherwise the car is pretty immac. I will take photos of it soon.

Soing a bit of searching in the forums.
I know that they have head gasket issues.
Should i get my head bolts re-torqued?
If so what torque setting are you guys using?

MX83 is the model code.
M - for the engine.
X8 - for the chassis.
3 - for the body.

Stock was 54 lb.ft., I've heard guys going 68-72 lb.ft. on the head bolts.
Sounds like you may need a valve adjustment... doing one requires shims.

I did my headbolts to 68ft-lbs a couple years ago haven't had a prob since and they have not loosened one bit.
That knock you talk about doesn't sound like excessive valve clearances.

mmm factory rod knock.
Has the motor got oil?
7M's do not enjoy low oil pressure and have a tendancy to break.

Lots of info in here but for the good and bad on the dreaded BHG....the signs and results..the good info on the ARP head stud solution/metal gaskets and increasing the screw down tension to minimise the inherent problem..check out the Toyotacressida forum currently hiding under www.thermactor.com
...and welcome..Cheers

Hey picked up my car today and i'm stoked with how it drives.
Really comfy car.
Needs a brake upgrade though.
That knocking sound has gone for some reason? I guess it's because the car hasn't been driven for 5 months?

I've been thinking about it.
I just gonna wait and see if the 7M behaves itself in the next 6 months..
