Stock ECUs on differents engys Sun, 17 July 2005 06:32 Go to next message
I was doing some digging in the search, and I came up with this thread:

http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.php?t=msg&t h=21093&rid=11470&S=ec64ebeda9d817c8e52061 4cea68b3da&pl_view=&start=0#msg_177624

(links to a thread about a 22r-e ECU on an 18r-g)

Now this set the mind to thinking. Is it really feasible to do this? a 22r is a longer stroke than an 18rg, and it has a lower redline (and 2.4L:2.0L displacement), so it just seems like a bit of a compromise.

I can see how it wouldn't make a difference in closed loop mode, 'cos the ECU is sampling, but it is conceivable that at WOT, when the ECU is reading off preset maps the mixtures would eat poo.

Can anyone with greater knowledge enlighten me? Cheers.

The engine management on a 22R-E is pretty simple and quite flexible; because it's using an airflow meter it doesn't matter much what engine it's attached to, it just sees X amount of air and injects Y amount of fuel to match. It's certainly not ideal but if you tweak the AFM on a chassis dyno you should be able to get it pretty close.

Ah, ok. Thanks for that. Cool . So this means that there are no preset maps in this style of ECU? Does this mean that if the engine got chunky cams, for example, the stock ECU would respond accordingly and deliver appropriate mixtures? Presumably they wouldn't be the last word in economy or sophistication though...

It depends, but big cams would probably be pushing the limit, especially if you want it to idle and run smoothly at part throttle.

chunky cams on any car with an air flow meter usually fuks the idle and low end range big time

why do u need chunky cams these day unless u r goin for forced induction

in n/a trim u will need heaps of money to get good power

Yeah, this is a hypothetical. It's not something I intend on doing (at least on an engine designed for power), I just found the article and thought it was interesting. Just a question in aid of my quest for knowledge really. Cool

I once found a similar scenario with disasterous consequences. A guy took a stock (carbied) engine and an ECU from a different car and put a turbo on it. He found it was incredibly lean, so he stuck extra injectors after the throttle body running at 100% duty cycle. Made me laugh my head off when he blew the thing up. Laughing
