petrol in Oil Wed, 20 July 2005 02:15 Go to next message
Well as the topic says i have a few little problems, last ngiht i check the oil in my daily to find the second i ripped the oil cap off it stunk like juice and had a ll the gunk around the cap, whats everyones diagnosis?

i was thinking maybe a ring or a slight head gasket.

water is fine, plugs look fine except one because it is a toyota they have the long plastic plugs and the plastic on one looks like it has rusted some how and has arc marks, apart from that all the sensors look to be in good condition, i am a little sus about the oxy sensor tho

opinions will be most appreciated
oh yeah its a st185 i think from memory with a 5fse

Joe

A compression ring may have failed allowing compression to leak into the crankcase area. This will in effect cause a few other symptoms like extra crankcase pressure (which can be seem by removing your oil cap whilst motor is running and see the vapour gashing out).

First thing i'd do is a compression check. Also have a good look round your head an inlet system for any fresh leaks of oil and/or fuel. Might be a gasket...

I had a simular problem, oil smells of fuel. Oldcorrollas brought to my attention that it's probably cuased from not driving the car enough! if that's the case a long drive to really heat the oil up should clear the gasoline smell from the oil. Leaking injector could also seep gasoline into the sump.

Dingaling - the car is driven daily for 2 30 minute intervals and goes for longer than an hour trips atleast once a week, regarding a leaky injector how would the fuel make it to the sump and i think i would have fuel leaking onto the manifold and i would know about and the bay would stink, there is no smell until i open the lid

also what are the best plugs to run on the 5fse? hot or cold? what is the rating on them?

also is there a upgrade for the leads, they dont look like the greatest quality

Joe

Does the car take a few cranks to start after being left for an extended period of time? - leaking injectors if so.

Does the car lack power and turn over easier than it used to? - low compression probably through worn rings if so.

Does the car blow smoke, use oil, run rough?, ..., - buggered engine - rebuild time!

You really haven't provided enough infomation to diagnose the problem, have a compression test done and post the results - I know it's a pain in the arse to do with an ST185, but this will give a better indication of engine condition than people's musings?!

the car normally cranks first time only the otherday it did'nt it took a little longer that is what brought my attention to the the smell, once it kicked over it was rough running on 3 cylinders from the sounds.

car does not blow smoke oil is changed regularly, is coming up to 70k 96 model

does'nt burn any oil although rocker cover gasket needs replacing

Your Car will be an ST204 if it's a 1996 model - time to take it to a good mechanic to have the problem diagnosed - running on 3 cylinders is never a good thing.

it was only running briefly, i have a sneaky feeling that my O2 sensor is shonky and if could have just had too much fuel or lean how can i test it? there is nothing on the computers diagnosis to tell me otherwise.

i have enough mechanical know how to fix the problem what ever it is, it is just diagnosing it

A faulty oxy sensor will show up in the error codes, search the web or a Toyota service manual for the correct procedure to procure these for your car, and set forth with your new found knowledge?!
